            Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Their sound hath gone forth into all the earth.”

Verse: “The heavens declare the glory of God!” Psalm 18:4, 1

Epistle:The Reading from the St. Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians. (11:21-12:9)

BRETHREN, in whatever anyone is bold—I speak foolishly—I am bold also. Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I. Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself) I am a better one: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in imprisonments more frequent, in deaths more often. From the Jews I received five times the forty stripes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; on frequent journeys, in perils of rivers, in perils of robbers, in perils from my own race, in perils from the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils at sea, in perils among false brethren; in labor and travail, in vigils often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Besides those external things, there is that which presses upon me daily, the anxiety for all the churches. Who is weakened that I should not be weakened? Who is caused to stumble that I should not burn? If it is necessary that I should boast, I will boast of the things that concern my infirmity. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, the One who is blessed for evermore, knows that I do not lie. In Damascus, the governor under Aretas the king guarded the city of the Damascenes, willing to seize me, and through a window I was let down in a basket by the wall, and escaped his hands.

I must boast; though it is not expedient; but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I do not know, or whether out of the body, I do not know—God knows), who was caught up to the third heaven. And I know that this man (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know—God knows) was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which no one is allowed to utter. On behalf of this one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my infirmities. For if I would desire to boast, I shall not be foolish, for I shall speak the truth. But I refrain from it, lest anyone should think of me above that which he sees me to be, or hears from me. And to keep me from being exalted above measure through the abundance of revelations, I was given a thorn in the flesh, an angel of Satan to buffet me, to keep me from being exalted above measure. For this thing I beseeched the Lord three times, that it might depart from me. And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for thee, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore will I rather boast in my infirmities, that he power of Christ may rest upon me.

Gospel:The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (16:13-19)

AT THAT TIME, when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His Disciples, “Who do men say that the Son of man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father Who is in Heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in Heaven.”

The Apostles’ Fast is a fast that was undertaken by the disciples of Jesus Christ following the Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Having rejoiced for fifty days following Pascha and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the apostles began to prepare for their departure from Jerusalem to spread Christ’s message. As part of their preparation, they began a fast with prayer to ask God to strengthen their resolve and to be with them in their missionary undertakings. The Apostles’ Fast is not as strict as Great Lent or the Dormition Fast, but entails abstaining from red meat, poultry, meat products, eggs, and dairy products. In addition, we abstain from fish, wine and oil on Wednesdays and Fridays.

 Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us.”

Verse: “Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous!” Psalm 32:22, 1

Gospel:The Reading from the St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. (2:10-16)

BRETHREN, glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek; for there is no respect of persons with God.  For as many as have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law; and as many as have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law.  (For it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law are justified.  For when the nations who do not have the Law do by nature the things contained in the Law, these then, in spite of not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, and their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them) in the day when God judges the secrets of persons, according to my gospel, through Jesus Christ.

Gospel:The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (4:18-23)

AT THAT TIME, as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. And going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him. And He went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the Kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “God is wondrous in His saints.”

Verse: “In the churches bless ye God!” Psalm 67:35, 27

Gospel:The Reading from the St. Paul’s Epistle to the Hebrews. (11:33-12:2)

Brethren, all the saints through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, and turned to flight armies of the aliens.  Women received their dead by resurrection.  And others were tortured, not accepting their deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.  And others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment.  They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were tempted, they were slain with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, being destitute, afflicted, tormented—of whom the world was not worthy—wandering in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.  And all these, having obtained a witness through their faith, did not receive the promise, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.  Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the Author and Perfecter of our faith.

Gospel:The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.

(10:32-33, 37-38; 19:27-30)

The Lord said to His disciples, “Everyone who acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father Who is in heaven; but whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before My Father Who is in heaven. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.” Then Peter said in reply, “Lo, we have left everything and followed Thee. What then shall we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the New World, when the Son of Man shall sit on His glorious throne, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My Name’s sake, will receive a hundred fold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first.”

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Their sound has gone forth into all the earth.”

Verse: “The heavens declare the glory of God!” Psalm 18:4, 1

Epistle: The Reading is from the Acts of the Holy Apostles. (2:1-11)

WHEN THE DAY OF PENTECOST HAD COME, the Apostles were all together in one place.  And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.  And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.  And at this sound the multitude came together, and were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language.  And they were all amazed and marveled, saying, “Behold, are not all of these who are speaking Galileans?  And how is it that we hear, each of us in our own language?  Parthians and Medes and Elamites and the residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs, we hear them speaking in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. John.  (7:37-52; 8:12)

On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and proclaimed, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.  He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.’”  Now this He said about the Spirit, which those who believed in Him were to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.  When they heard these words, many of the people said, “This is really the prophet.”  Others said, “This is the Christ.”  But some said, “Is the Christ to come from Galilee?  Has not the Scripture said that the Christ is descended from David, and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”  So there was a division among the people over Him.  Some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.  The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?”  The officers answered, “No man ever spoke like this man!”  The Pharisees answered them, “Are you led astray, you also?  Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in Him?  But this crowd, who do not know the Law, are accursed.”  Nicodemus, who had gone to Him before, and who was one of them, said to them, “Does our Law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does?”  They replied, “Are you from Galilee too?  Search and you will see that no prophet is to rise from Galilee.”  Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

In those days, Paul was determined to sail past Ephesus, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia; for he was hastening, if possible, to be at Jerusalem, on the Day of Pentecost.  And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the priests of the church.  And when they came to him, he said to them:  “Take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you bishops, to shepherd the church of the Lord and God, which He purchased with His own blood.  For I know that after my departure ravenous wolves will enter among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

Therefore remain watchful, remembering that for three years I did not cease to admonish every one, night and day with tears.  And now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.  I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel.  You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me.  In all things I have shown you that by such laboring we ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”  And when he had spoken thus, he knelt down on his knees with them all and prayed.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. John.  (17:1-13)

AT THAT TIME, Jesus lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Thy Son that the Son may glorify Thee, since Thou hast given Him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom Thou hast given Him.  And this is eternal life, that they know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom Thou hast sent.  I glorified Thee on earth, having accomplished the work which Thou gavest Me to do; and now, Father, glorify Thou Me in Thy own presence with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was made. I have manifested Thy Name to the men whom Thou gavest Me out of the world; Thine they were, and Thou gavest them to Me, and they have kept Thy word.  Now they know that everything that Thou hast given Me is from Thee; for I have given them the words which Thou gavest Me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from Thee; and they have believed that Thou didst send Me.  I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom Thou hast given Me, for they are Thine; all Mine are Thine, and Thine are Mine, and I am glorified in them.  And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to Thee.  Holy Father, keep them in Thy Name, which Thou hast given Me, that they may be one, even as We are one.  While I was with them, I kept them in Thy Name, which Thou have given Me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled.  But now I am coming to Thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.”
