Nourishment of the Soul“Grumbling is caused by misery and it can be put aside by doxology (giving praise). Grumbling begets grumbling and doxology begets doxology. When someone doesn’t grumble over a problem troubling him, but rather praises God, then the devil gets frustrated and goes off to someone else who grumbles, in order to cause everything to go even worse for him. You see, the more one grumbles, the more one falls into ruin. Sometimes the devil deceives us and makes us unable to be pleased with anything; however, one can celebrate all things in a spiritual manner, with doxology, and secure God’s constant blessing.”
St. Paisios of Mt. Athos

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Make your vows and pay them to the Lord our God.”

Verse: “God is known in Judea, His Name is great in Israel!”  Psalm 75:10,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians. (6:16-7:1)

Brethren, you are a temple of the living God, even as God has said: “I will dwell in them, and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.” “‘Therefore come out from among them, and be separate,’ says the Lord, ‘and touch nothing unclean; and I will receive you, and I will be a Father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me,’ says the Lord Almighty.”  Having therefore these promises, O beloved ones, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (5:1-11)

At that time, Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret.  And He saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.  Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, Jesus asked him to put out a little from the land.  And He sat down and taught the people from the boat.  And when Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”  And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at Thy word I will let down the nets.”  And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.  And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.  But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”  For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish, which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.  And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men.”  And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “How magnified are Thy works, O Lord! In Wisdom hast Thou made them all.”

Verse: ” Bless the Lord, O my soul!”  Psalm 103:26,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s  Epistle to the Galatians. (2:16-20)

Brethren, knowing that a person is not justified by the works of the Law, but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.  But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin?  God forbid!  For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a transgressor.  For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God.  I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself up for me.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. (8:34-9:1)

The Lord said, “If any man would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospel’s will save it.  For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?  For what can a man give in return for his soul?  For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed, when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”  And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Kingdom of God come with power.”

O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance, granting to Thy people victory over all their adversaries, and by the power of Thy Cross, preserving Thine Estate.

Apolytikion of St. Eustathios and his Family – Tone 4

Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our Immortal God.  For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons’ strengthless presumption. Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Exalt ye the Lord our God.”

Verse: “The Lord is King, let the peoples tremble!”  Psalm 98:5,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians. (1:18-24)

Brethren, the word of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing; but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.  For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning  I will bring to naught.”  Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age?  Has not God turned the wisdom of the world into foolishness?  For, since the world in the wisdom of God did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God though the foolishness of preaching to save those who believe.  For Jews ask for signs, and Greeks seek wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Greeks; but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the Power of God and  the wisdom of God.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. John. (19:6-11,13-20,25-28,30-35)

At that time, the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death.  And they came to Pontius Pilate saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no crime in Him.”  The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He has made Himself the Son of God.”  When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid; he entered the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where art Thou from?”  But Jesus gave no answer.  Pilate therefore said to Him, “Wilt Thou not speak to me?  Knowest Thou not that I have power to release Thee, and power to crucify Thee?”  Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over Me unless it had been given you from above.

When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Pavement,” and in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.”  Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.  He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” They cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then he handed Him over to them to be crucified.

So they took Jesus and led Him away, and He went out, bearing His own Cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew “Golgotha.”  There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them.  Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the Cross; it read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”  Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

Now standing by the Cross of Jesus were His mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene.  When Jesus saw His mother, and the Disciple whom He loved standing near, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”  Then He said to the Disciple, “Behold, your mother!”  And from that hour the Disciple took her to his own home.  After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now fulfilled, said, “It is finished;” and He bowed His head and gave up the spirit.

Since it was the Day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.  So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him; but when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.  But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.  He who saw it has borne witness–his testimony is true.     .

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Thou, O Lord, shalt keep us and shalt preserve us.”

Verse: “Save me,  O Lord, for the godly man is no more!”  Psalm 11:7,1)

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians. (1:21-2:4)

Brethren, The One who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, is God; who has also sealed us, and has given us the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.  Moreover, I call God for a witness upon my soul, that in order to spare you, I did not yet come to Corinth.  Not that we lord it over your faith, but we are fellow workers of your joy, for you are established in the faith.  But I determined this within myself, that I would not come again to you with sorrow.  For if I make you sorry, who then is the one who makes me glad, but the same who is made sorry by me?  And I wrote this very thing to you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from those in whom I ought to rejoice, having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.  For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not that you should be made sorry, but that you might know the love which I have more abundantly for you.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (22:2-14)

The Lord spoke this parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come.  Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.’ But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.  The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy.  Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.’  And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.  But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’  And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”     .

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 5

Let us believers praise and worship the Word; co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation. For, He took pleasure in ascending the Cross in the flesh to suffer death; and to raise the dead by His glorious Resurrection.

Apolytikion of the Archangel Michael – Tone 4

Supreme Commander of the Hosts of Heavens, we, the unworthy, importune and beseech thee that by thy supplications thou encircle us in the shelter of the wings of thine immaterial glory, guarding us who now fall down and cry to thee with fervor: Deliver us from dangers of all kinds, as the great Marshal of the heavenly hosts on high..

Kontakion of the Nativity of the Theotokos – Tone 4

By thy holy nativity, O pure one, Joachim and Anna were delivered from the reproach of barrenness; and Adam and Eve were delivered from the corruption of death; thy people do celebrate it, having been saved from the stain of iniquity, crying unto thee: The barren doth give birth to the Theotokos, who nourisheth our life.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “How magnified are Thy works, O Lord! In Wisdom hast Thou made them all.”

Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul!”  Psalm 103:2 6,1)

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians. (16:13-24)

Brethren, be watchful, be established in the faith, be manly, be strong.  Let all your things be done in love.  Now I beseech you, brethren (since you know the house of Stephanas, that it is the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have set themselves for the ministry of the saints), that you also be subject to such, and to everyone who is a fellow worker and laborer.  I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatos and Achaicos, for that which was lacking on your part they supplied.  For they refreshed my spirit as well as yours; therefore acknowledge such men.

The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.  All the brethren salute you.  Salute one another with a holy kiss. The salutation of me, Paul, is with my own hand.  If any one does not love the Lord, let him be anathema. Maranatha! The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (21:33-42)

The Lord spoke this parable: “There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country.  When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.  Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them.  Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But when the tenants saw the son, they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him.  When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their season.” Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?”

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 4

Having learned the joyful message of the Resurrection from the angel, the women disciples of the Lord cast from them their parental condemnation. And proudly broke the news to the Disciples, saying: Death hath been spoiled; Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy.

Apolytikion of the Baptist’s Beheading – Tone 2

The memory of the righteous is celebrated with songs of praise, but the Lord’s testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner.  Thou wast shown indeed to be the most honorable of the prophets, for in the waters thou didst baptize Him Who had been proclaimed.  After suffering with joy in behalf of the truth, thou didst proclaim even to those in Hades the God Who appeared in the flesh, Who takest away the sin of the world, and granteth us the Great Mercy.
