Food for Hungry People Campaign: We have extended the giving window until this Sunday. and are currently planning to send a check for $1,040 to Food for Hungry People this week. If you have not yet made your contribution, please do so online or in the tray at church. This is specifically for the FFHP campaign.

We welcome contributions to our local benevolence fund all year round.

Saying Goodbye: We will have a pitch-in meal at Coffee Hour today as we say goodbye to two of our own. Caleb (John) Lewis, who has been a faithful chanter and member here at All Saints has accepted a job at an Orthodox church in California.  Brian (Nectarios) Curl, also a faithful and beloved member of All Saints, is headed for 2+ years in the Peace Corps in Moldova!  Today is the last Sunday for both men.  A card shower is one good way to say good-bye.

Graduating high school seniors, please let us know who you are so we can plan something for you as the school year draws to a close.

Myrrh Bearers will  meet May 7th instead of the meeting scheduled for today.

Epistle: The Reading from the Acts of the Saintly and Pure Apostles. (6:1-7)

In those days, when the disciples were increasing in number, the Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. And the Twelve summoned the body of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” And what they said pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaos, a proselyte of Antioch. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid their hands upon them. And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the faith.

Gospel: The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. (15:43-16:8)

At that time, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the Kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate wondered if He were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether Jesus was already dead. And when he learned from the centurion that He was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. And he bought a linen shroud, and taking Him down, wrapped Him in the linen shroud, and laid Him in a tomb, which had been hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a stone against the door of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where He was laid. And when the Sabbath was passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices so that they might go and anoint Him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?” And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back—it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, Who was crucified. He has risen, He is not here; see the place where they laid Him. But go, tell His Disciples and Peter that He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see Him, as He told you.” And they went out and fled from the tomb; for trembling and astonishment had come upon them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

In those days, Herod the king laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church.  He killed James the brother of John with the sword; and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also.  This was during the days of Unleavened Bread.  And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people.  So Peter was kept in prison; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the Church.  The very night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison; and behold, an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.”  And the chains fell off his hands.  And the angel said to him, “Wrap your mantle around you and follow me.”  And he went out and followed him; he did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision.  When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city.  It opened to them of its own accord, and they went out and passed on through one street; and immediately the angel left him.  And Peter came to himself, and said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the Disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the Disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other Disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe.” Eight days later, His Disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, “Peace be with you.” Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing.” Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the Disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His Name.

Great and Holy Pascha

 Visitors, Fr. Peter Jon and the entire parish welcome you today.

Please be our guest at the services and at all activities here at All Saints.

As you arrive for the 10pm service: Take your prepared baskets and colored eggs to the place reserved for them near the iconostasis.  If you are sharing colored eggs, there is a basket in which to place them.

Saturday Night begins with Rush when we receive the Light in the darkened church and then  go in Procession outside, around the church singing of Christ’s Holy Resurrection. After we learn the identity of the King of Glory, we enter into the now brightly lighted church.   Matins begins with beautiful hymns and readings. Christ is Risen is our proclamation. Then the Divine Liturgy continues with the joy of His Resurrection. The evening concludes with a light festive meal.

Nourishment of the Soul: “You make up a chorus, so that joined together in harmony and having received the godly strain in unison, you might sing in one voice through Christ to the Father, so that He might hear you and recognize you through your good deeds as members of His Son.” – St. Ignatius

Food for Hungry People Program: Make checks payable to All Saints, and we will send one check after Holy Pascha.

Agape Sunday: You are all invited to come to Great Vespers at noon to hear the Holy Gospel proclaimed in many languages. Then as we sing Christ is Risen from the Dead, we visit the Empty Tomb in procession. Afterward, the children rush with joy to gather colorful eggs on the lawn. Then the pitch-in meal concludes the afternoon. Christ is Risen! Indeed, He is Risen!

As we approach Holy Pascha, here are some details that may interest you.

 Donations of Lilies should be brought to the social hall by Saturday morning. Decoration of the church is done from noon through the afternoon. If you would like to make a contribution to the flower fund in honor of a loved one or as a memorial, please give the donation at any time this week. Give Father the names to be prayed for.

 Food for Hungry People donations can be made to the church, and they will be sent after Pascha.

 Great and Holy Wednesday Evening, April 12th – The Holy Unction Service at 6 pm

James 5:13-16 “Is there anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise.  Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in  the name of the Lord…”  Baptized and Chrismated Orthodox Christians will be anointed with holy oil.

Great and Holy Thursday Morning, April 13th – St. Basil’s Vesperal Liturgy at 9am.

The Mystical Supper – Following Christ’s example, Fr. Peter Jon will wash the feet of those who are present.

Great and Holy Thursday Evening, April 13th – The Reading of the Twelve Gospels at 6pm

Troparion: “While the glorified Disciples, being illuminated at the evening washing, Judas of evil worship, was stricken and darkened with the love of the silver.  And unto lawless judges, O righteous Judge, he delivered and surrendered Thee…” Christ is nailed to the Holy Cross.

Great and Holy Saturday Morning, April 15th at 9am. Divine Liturgy

The deep purple vestments change to white as we approach Holy Pascha in the evening service.

Great and Holy Pascha Eve Services, April 15th at 10pm – Rush, Matins, and the Resurrection Liturgy

Throughout the service, we will joyously chant and sing “Christ is Risen from the Dead, Trampling Down Death by Death and upon those in the Tombs, bestowing Life!”

…Bring Pascha baskets to the front of the nave. These will be blessed near the end of the service. (Typically baskets include cheese, meat, eggs, wine, bread and other dairy or festive foods which have been abstained from during Great Lent) These are either taken home after the blessing and eaten in the days following Pascha, or they may be shared with family or friends later in the evening.

…A break-the-fast meal is provided by the church at the end of the service (deli meats and cheese and a few side dishes.  You may add specialties to this faire, but we hope to keep clean-up to a minimum.)

Agape Sunday, April 16th  at Noon – Great Vespers includes the reading of the  Holy Gospel from John 20:19-25 in many languages.

There is then a Procession to the Empty Tomb; the Egg Hunt  is on the lawn. The eggs have been prepared, the children quickly put the eggs in baskets we provide, but they may also bring their own basket.  Then the Great Feast is spread with your many pitch-in dishes.  Jan G. is providing two baked hams, but everything else is donated.

Lazarus Saturday morning Chrismation and Liturgy followed by a workday to prepare for Palm Sunday.

Feast of Palm Sunday

 Visitors, bring your friends to Holy Week and Great and Holy Pascha.

 Nourishment of the Soul: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.” (Deuteronomy 6:5–8).

We offer our love and prayers for Cathy Alexander at the passing of her beloved husband Alex John.

Food for Hungry People Program: Make checks payable to All Saints, and we will send one check after Holy Pascha.

Volunteers Needed: Sometime during Holy Week,  fill plastic eggs for the Egg Hunt (we have the candy) and  fill luminaries for the candlelight procession on Pascha Eve (we have the materials);On Pascha Eve place luminaries on the lawn around 9:15;On Agape Sunday to put plastic eggs on the lawn during the Procession to the Empty Tomb; Pitch-in foods on Agape Sunday.

Agape Sunday: Readers in various languages are needed. Please see Charles Coats.

 Egg Dye and Egg Wraps are in the hallway. Prepare your Pascha Baskets this week and bring them to the Saturday Night Service to be blessed by Fr. Peter Jon.

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but  have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Bring donations of lilies to the Social Hall this week to be used to decorate for Pascha.

Epistle: The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul the Philippians. (4:4-9)

Brethren, rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, these do; and the God of peace will be with you.

Gospel: The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. John. (12:1-18)

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus who had died was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made Him a supper; Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at table with Him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, one of His Disciples (he who was to betray Jesus), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not because he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the moneybox he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, “Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of My burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have Me.” When the great crowd of the Jews learned that He was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, “Hosanna! Blessed is He Who cometh in the Name of the Lord, the King of Israel!” And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” His Disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of Him and had been done to Him. The crowd that had been with Jesus when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet Jesus was that they heard He had done this sign.
