Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings                                           

Prokeimenon: “Thou, O Lord, shalt keep us and shalt preserve us.”

Verse: “Save me, O Lord, for the godly man is no more!”  Psalm 11:7,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. (12:6-14)

Brethren, having gifts that differ according to the grace that was given to us, let each use them accordingly: whether prophecy, let him prophesy according to the proportion of the faith; or ministry, let him give himself to the ministry; or the teacher, to the teaching; or he who exhorts, in the exhorting; he who gives, let him do it with simplicity; he who presides, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.

Let love be without hypocrisy.  Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.  Love one another with brotherly affection; in honor preferring one another; in diligence not slothful; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing steadfastly in prayer; communicating to the necessities of the saints; given to hospitality.  Bless those who persecute you; bless, and do not curse.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (9:1-8)

                At that time,  Jesus got into a boat, crossed over,  and came to His own city.  And behold, they brought to Him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith,  He said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.”  And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, knowing their thoughts said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?  For which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?  But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins” –He then said to the paralytic–“Rise, take up your bed and go home.”  And he rose and went home.  When the crowds saw it, they marveled, and they glorified God, Who had given such authority to men.

The Myrrh Bearers invite you to join them in their effort toward environmental responsibility by helping to keep trash and recyclables (plastic, metal, glass, cardboard) separate.  We will have more clear designations on the bins in the kitchen soon, so any questions can be directed to Stephanie, Nina, Cathy A. or Marcia. We also ask that you use reusable (“real”) plates, cups, and flatware, and only use throwaways when absolutely necessary (such as with children or outdoors).  We hope to get some reusable BPA-free plastic items that can be used for these purposes to further reduce our consumption. Thank you for your participation in our efforts to go green!

Scouting Ranks: Max Leininger has advanced to Life Scout, and  Abe is now First Class Scout.  Vanden‘s rank in Cub Scouts is Wolf Scout. Congratulations Leininger sons and parents Chris and Rachel!

Prayers for Campers: Abby and Lilly Blair; Katie, Molly, John, and Nick Alexander are attending Antiochian Village Camp until Friday, July 10th. The  Leininger sons are attending scout camp Maumee July 5 – 11.

Annual All Saints Festival: Please consider how you can be involved in the planning phase, or volunteer for a key role on the day of the festival. The first meeting is scheduled for next Sunday, July 12th  after Divine Liturgy.

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. (5:22-6:2)

                 Brethren, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faith, meekness, self-control: against such there is no law.  And those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts.  If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.  Let us not become vainglorious, provoking one another, envying one another. Brethren, if a person is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual should restore such a one in a spirit of meekness; looking to yourself, lest you also be tempted.  Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (8:28-9:1)

                At that time,  when Jesus came to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met Him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way.  And behold, they cried out, “What have we to do to Thee, O Son of God? Art Thou come here to torment us before the time?”  Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them.  And the demons begged Him, “If Thou castest us out, send us away into the herd of swine.”  And He said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters.  The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs.  And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their neighborhood.  And getting into a boat, He crossed over and came to His own city.

Sponsored by St. Mark’s United Methodist Women, the event is Wednesday, July 15 at 2 pm. If you intend to go, please tell Marcia so we may send a group RSVP.

Social Hour Table: Parishioners whose last names begin with the letters I-Z will prepare the table for social hour. However, any who feel led to contribute are welcome to do so.

The Myrrh Bearers meet in the social hall during fellowship hour. Bring your snack and drink,  and join us in the choir area.

 Campers: Our teens left early this morning with their sponsors for their Antiochian Village Camp experience.  Please keep them in your prayers until their safe return on Friday, July 10th. Another group leaves later in the summer.

 Annual All Saints Festival: Please consider how you can be involved in the planning phase. The first meeting is scheduled for July 12th  after Divine Liturgy.

 Friday evening before the 4th:We will begin with Vespers at 7pm, followed by a the 3-year memorial for Rev. Fr. Peter E. Gillquist, picnic, and fireworks (9:30). Grilled burgers and hot dogs will be provided, but attendees are encouraged to bring side dishes and desserts. Bring your family and friends. *

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Romans. (6:18-23)

Brethren, having been set free from sin, you have become bond-servants of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of the infirmity of your flesh.  For just as you once yielded your members as bond-servants to uncleanness and to iniquity for iniquity, so now yield your members as bond-servants to righteousness for holiness.

For when you were bond-servants of sin, you were free from righteousness. What fruit did you have from the things of which you are now ashamed?  For the end of those things is death.  But now, having been set free from sin and having become bond-servants of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end is life eternal.  For the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is life eternal in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (8:5-13)

                At that time,  as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to Him, beseeching Him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress.”  And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”  But the centurion answered Him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed.  For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard him, He marveled, and said to those who followed Him, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.  I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.”        And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; be it done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Brethren, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Through Him also we have obtained our access by faith to this grace in which we stand, and we boast in hope of the glory of God.  And not only so, but we also boast in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces patience; and patience produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put to shame, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.

For while we were still weak, in due season Christ died for the ungodly.  For scarcely for a righteous man will one die, though perhaps for a good man one would even dare to die.  But God shows His own love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.  Much more then, being now justified by His blood, through Him shall we be saved from the wrath.  For if we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, while we were enemies, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by His life.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (6:22-33)

            The Lord said,  “The eye is the lamp of the body.  So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness.  If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!  No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and mammon.  Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life; what you shall eat or what you shall drink; nor about your body, what you shall put on.  Is not the soul more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of heaven: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his stature?  And why are you anxious about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon himself in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O men of little faith?  Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Style Show and Tea: Women are invited again this year to a fundraiser for Monroe County United Ministries, a charitable group that serves children and families in the county. Sponsored by St. Mark’s United Methodist Women, the event is Wednesday, July 15 at 2 pm. If you intend to go, please tell Marcia so we may send a group RSVP.

Social Hour Table: Parishioners whose last names begin with the letters G-H will prepare the table for social hour. However, any who feel led to contribute are welcome to do so.
