Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost

The Holy Prophet Nahum; Venerable Philaret The Almsgiver of Amnia;

Martyr Ananias the Persian; Theoklitos, Archbishop of Lakedaemonias

Visitors, you are always welcome at All Saints.

Today we welcome Fr. Radoslav as guest celebrant.

Nourishment of the Soul:  “You look into a mirror so that you may know what is in your face, whether there are any blemishes in it, and having seen blemishes, you cleanse them. Let the immaculate life of Christ be a mirror to your soul. Does it desire the same things that Christ desires? And does it do what Christ did when He lived on earth? And in it you will see what is contrary to the life of Christ, and you will cleanse it all like blemishes with repentance and contrition of heart.” — St. Tikhon of Zadonsk

The Nativity Fast is divided into two periods. The first period is November 15 through December 19 when the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, fish, wine and oil) is observed with katalysis for wine and oil on Tuesday and Thursday, and for fish, wine and oil on Saturday and Sunday. The second period is December 20 through 24 when the traditional fasting discipline (no meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, fish, wine and oil) is observed Monday through Friday, but with katalysis for wine and oil on Saturday and Sunday. [Katalysis is Greek, meaning “relaxation”.]

Aunt Ruth’s Toffee: Vicki Gans is taking orders for Christmas candies to be delivered December 15th.

Communion: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Communion Line: The choir goes first in both lines so members may continue ministering through music during communion. Little Lambs follow. The ushers then assist each row from front to back.  Those seated in the over-flow may follow an adjacent row.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance.”

Verse: “Unto Thee, O Lord, will I cry, O my God!” Psalm 27: 9, 1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians. (2:4-10)

Brethren, God, Who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and made us sit with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.  For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God—not because of works, lest any man should boast.  For, we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (22:2-14)

The Lord spoke this parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come.  Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, Behold I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready;’ come to the marriage feast.’ But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.  The king was angry and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.  Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy.  Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.’ And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found.  Both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.

“But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless.  Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’ For many are called but few are chosen.”

Alternative GOSPEL for today

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:35-43)

At that time, when Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” And he cried, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me receive my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise to God.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Thou, O Lord, shalt keep us and shalt preserve us.”

Verse: “Save me, O Lord, for the godly man is no more!” Psalm 11: 7, 1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. (6:11-18)

Brethren, see how large a letter I have written to you with my own hand.  As many as desire to make a fair show in the flesh, they compel you to be circumcised, only that they may not be persecuted for the Cross of Christ. For not even those who are circumcised do themselves keep the Law; but they desire to have you circumcised, that they may boast in your flesh.

But God forbid that I should boast, except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through Whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world.

For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.  And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

Henceforth, let no one trouble me; for I bear in my body the brand-marks of the Lord Jesus.  The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, Brethren. Amen.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:18-27)

At that time, a man came testing Jesus and asking, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”  And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good?  No one is good but God alone.  You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery. Do not kill. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness. Honor your father and mother.’”  And the man said, “All these I have observed from my youth.”  And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, “One thing you still lack.  Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”  But when the man heard this he became sad, for he was very rich.  Jesus, seeing him sad, said, “How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!  For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”  Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?”  Jesus said, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “How magnified are Thy works, O LORD!  In Wisdom hast Thou made them all.”

Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul! Psalm 103: 26, 1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. (2:16-20)

Brethren, knowing that a person is not justified by the works of the Law, but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.  But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin?  God forbid!  For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a transgressor.  For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God.  I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself up for me.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (12:16-21)

The Lord spoke this parable: “The land of a rich man brought forth plentifully; and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’  And he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns, and build larger ones; and there I will store all my grain and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, be merry.’  But God said to him, ‘Fool!  This night your soul is required of you; and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’  So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”  As He said this, Jesus called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “O chant unto our God, chant ye.”

Verse: “Clap your hands, all ye nations! Psalm 46:6, 1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. (1:11-19)

Brethren, I make known to you that the Gospel which was preached by me is not according to man; neither did I receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came to me by revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my manner of life in time past in Judaism, how I persecuted the Church of God beyond measure and destroyed it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age within my nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

But when it pleased God, who separated me, even from my mother’s womb, and called me through His grace, to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the nations, immediately I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and again I returned to Damascus.  Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Peter, and remained with him fifteen days.  But I saw none of the other apostles, except James, the Lord’s brother.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (10:25-37)

At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read?” And the lawyer answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” And Jesus said to him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will live.” But the lawyer, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?”

                                      Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “The Lord is my strength and my song.

Verse: “With chastisement has the Lord chastened me! Psalm 117:14, 18

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians. (11:31-12:9)

Brethren, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, the One Who is blessed forevermore, knows that I do not lie. In Damascus, the governor under Aretas the king guarded the city of the Damascenes, willing to seize me, and through a window I was let down in a basket by the wall, and escaped his hands.

I must boast, though it is not expedient; but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.  I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago (whether in the body, I do not know, or whether out of the body, I do not know—God knows), who was caught up to the third heaven.  And I know that this man (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know– God knows) was caught up into Paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which no person is allowed to utter. On behalf of this one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my infirmities. For if I would desire to boast, I shall not be foolish, for I shall speak the truth.  But I refrain from it, lest anyone should think of me above that which he sees me to be, or hears from me.  And to keep me from being exalted above measure through the abundance of revelations, I was given a thorn in the flesh, an angel of Satan to buffet me, to keep me from being exalted above measure.  For this thing I beseeched the Lord three times, that it might depart from me.  And H said to me, “My grace is sufficient for thee, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”  Most gladly therefore will I rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (16:19-31)

The Lord said, “There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day.  And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.  The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom.  And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.’  But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.  And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’  And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’  But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’  And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’  He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”
