Nourishment of the Soul: “ Here is a sign: if you are distressed over anything it means that you have not fully surrendered to God’s will, although it may seem to you that you live according to His will.” – St. Silouan the Athonite

Alex and Cathy Alexander: Alex hopes to get the staples removed after his appointment on Tuesday. He is progressing slowly at his brother-in-law’s home as meds are being adjusted.  He is quite weak.  I asked what he wanted me to report. He replied, “I want to get back to church!”

Vicki Gans appreciates your prayers, visits, and phone calls, more than words can express.  She has stated that even while people are supplying her with food, they should not feel obligated to come with food! She just wants to see you, her family in Christ. She may have a few housekeeping chores later.

The Men’s meeting is today after Divine Liturgy with Daniel Mullis leading the discussion.

Communion: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Communion Line: The choir goes first in both lines so members may continue ministering through music during communion. Little Lambs follow. The ushers then assist each row from front to back.  Those seated in the over-flow may follow an adjacent row.

Confession: Confessions are heard Wednesday and Saturday evenings half an hour before services or by appointment during the week.

Orthodoxy 101 continues on Wednesday evening around 7:00.  Reader Tikhon’s topic: “Living an Orthodox Life”.

Prokeimenon: “My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

Verse: “For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden!” St. Luke 1:46-48

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Second Epistle to Timothy. (3:10-15)

MY CHILD TIMOTHY, you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience, persecutions, sufferings, what things befell me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra. What persecutions I endured!  And out of them all, the Lord delivered me. Indeed all who would live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. But people who are wicked and deceivers will proceed from worse to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in the things you have learned and have been assured of,  knowing from whom you have learned them, and how from infancy you have known the sacred temple writings which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according St. Luke. (18:10-14)

The Lord spoke this parable: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank Thee that I am not like other men, extortionists, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to Heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Saturday, February 1st – February 9th

Pledge Forms are available as you plan your contributions to All Saints for this year, 2014Filling in these forms give us a target for planning budgets.  The pledge form lets you look at your own personal budget and determine if a tithe (10% of you net income) or another figure is possible for you to give to the church.  We see, in the New Testament, scriptures encouraging Christians to plan ahead to support the work of the churches. (2 Cor. 9:7; 1 Cor. 16:2)

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “My soul magnifies the Lord, And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

Verse: “For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden!” St. Luke 1:46-48

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Hebrews. (7:17-17) (4:9-15)

Brethren, it is beyond any dispute that the lesser is blessed by the better. And here mortal men receive tithes; but over there, by the One of Whom it is testified that He lives.  It could also be said, that Levi, the recipient of tithes, pays tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.

Now if there was perfection through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the Law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise ‘according to the order of Melchizedek,” and not be called according to the order of Aaron? For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is of necessity a change made also to the law. But as it is, the One whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no one has ever served the altar.  For it is evident that our Lord has dawned forth from Judah, a tribe which Moses spoke nothing concerning the priesthood.

And this becomes even more evident when another Priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest, not according to the law of a carnal commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.  For it is witnessed of Him, “Thou art a Priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according St. Luke. (2:22-40)

In those days, the parents of Jesus brought Him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And inspired by the Spirit he came into the Temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said, “Lord, now lettest thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word; for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation, which Thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to Thy people Israel.” And His father and his mother marveled at what was said about Him; and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.” And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity, and as a widow until she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God, and spoke of Him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. And when they had performed everything according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon Him.

 Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “The Lord will give strength unto His people.”

Verse: “Bring unto the Lord, ye sons of God; bring unto the Lord, glory and honor!”  Psalm 28:11:1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s First Epistle to St. Timothy. (4:9-15)

MY CHILD TIMOTHY, faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptance. For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we have our hope set on the living God, Who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.  These things command and teach.  Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to those who believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.  Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching.  Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the priests.  Meditate on these things; give yourself wholly to them; that your progress may be manifest to all.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according St. Luke. (19:1-10)

At that time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector, and rich. And he sought to see Who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature. So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Jesus, for He was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully. And when they saw it they all murmured, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “How magnified are Thy works, O Lord; in Wisdom hast Thou made them all.”

Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul!” Psalm 103:26:1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians. (3:4-11)

Brethren, when Christ, Who is our life, appears, then you will also appear with Him in glory.  Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idol worship; for the sake of such things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience; wherein you also once walked, when you lived in these things.  But now you also put them all away:  anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, and filthy language out of your mouths.  Do not lie to one another, having put off the old man with his works; and having put on the new man, who is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of his Creator, where there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond, or free; but Christ is all, and in all.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according St. Luke. (17:12-19)

At that time, as Jesus entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”  When He saw them He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”  And as they went they were cleansed.  Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving Him thanks.  Now he was a Samaritan.  Then Jesus said, “Were not ten cleansed?  Where are the nine?  Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”  And He said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon:Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us.”

Verse:Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous!” Psalm 32:22:1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians. (4:7-13)

Brethren, to each one of us is given the grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.  Therefore He says, “When He ascended up on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”  (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that He also descended into the lower parts of the earth? The One who descended is the same also who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)  And He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of ministry, for the building up of the Body of Christ, until we all arrive at the unity of the faith, and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, toward the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according St. Matthew.  (4:12-17)

At that time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth he went and dwelt in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulon and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The land of Zebulon and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

 Excerpt from “On Living Simply”

Should we look to kings and princes to put right the inequalities between rich and poor? Should we require soldiers to come and seize the rich person’s gold and distribute it among his destitute neighbors? Should we beg the emperor to impose a tax on the rich so great that it reduces them to the level of the poor and then to share the proceeds of that tax among everyone?

Equality imposed by force would achieve nothing, and do much harm. Those who combined both cruel hearts and sharp minds would soon find ways of making themselves rich again. Worse still, the rich whose gold was taken away would feel bitter and resentful; while the poor who received the gold from the hands of soldiers would feel no gratitude, because no generosity would have prompted the gift. Far from bringing moral benefit to society, it would actually do moral harm.

Material justice cannot be accomplished by compulsion; a change of heart will not follow. The only way to achieve true justice is to change people’s hearts first – and then they will joyfully share their wealth.

 St. John Chrysostom
