Blessing of the Children at the end of today’s service: Father Peter Jon will read the prayers of blessing as school-age children/teens and their teachers begin school year 2014-2015. University students and teachers will be blessed in September.
Coffee Hour Supplies: The pantry is empty! We use supplies from the kitchen pantry to supplement your weekly offerings. You may want to donate chips, salsa, cookies, coffee, nuts, crackers, pretzels, soda, or juice. This is different from the food pantry, used for those seeking food assistance. It too is almost empty except for a little pasta and rice.
Communion: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession. If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.
Communion Line: The choir goes first in both lines so members may continue ministering through music during communion. Little Lambs Sunday School follows. The ushers then assist each row from front to back. Those in the overflow behind the choir may follow adjacent rows.

Prokeimenon: “The Lord will give strength unto His people.
Verse: “Bring unto the LORD, ye sons of God; Bring unto the LORD glory and honor!”
Psalm 28:11, 1
Epistle:The Reading from Saint Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians. (1:10-17)
BRETHREN, I beseech you, by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing and that there be no schisms among you, but that you be perfected together in the same mind and in the same resolve. For it has been indicated to me concerning you, my brethren, by those who are of the household of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
Now what I mean is this; that each one of you says, “I am for Paul,” or “I am for Apollos,” or “I am for Cephas,” or “I am for Christ”: Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized into the name of Paul?” I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaios; lest anyone should say that you were baptized into my name. And I baptized also the household of Stephanas; other than that, I do not know whether I baptized any other. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in wisdom of words, lest the Cross of Christ should be made void.
Gospel:The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (14:14-22)
AT THAT TIME, when Jesus went ashore He saw a great throng; and He had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” They said to Him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” And He said, “Bring them here to Me.” Then He ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish He looked up to Heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Then Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings
Prokeimenon: “The righteous shall rejoice in the Lord.”
Verse: “Hearken unto my voice, O God!’” Psalm 63:10, 1
Epistle:The Reading from Saint Paul’s Second Epistle to Timothy. (2:1-10)
MY CHILD TIMOTHY, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things which you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Suffer hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier on service entangles himself in the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier. And if someone also contends in the games, he is not crowned, unless he has contended lawfully. The husbandman who labors must be the first to partake of the fruits. Consider what I say; and may the Lord grant you understanding in all things.
Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel, in which I suffer hardships and even bonds, as a criminal; but the word of God is not bound. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.
Gospel:The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (9:27-35)
AT THAT TIME, as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud: “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” When He entered the house, the blind men came to Him; and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, “See that no one knows it.” But they went away and spread His fame through all that district. As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to Him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.” And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity.

St. Nikon

Missionary Support: Last Sunday the Parish Council voted to send monthly support to the Hoppe Family serving as missionaries in Albania. Two council members also indicated they would commit to a monthly missionary offering. If you would like to support this family that is proclaiming the Good News in a country rediscovering its Christian heritage, please indicate on the enclosed paper. Nathan Hoppe told Fr. Peter Jon recently that having dependable monthly support would benefit their mission work. We hope to send to OCMC each month a predictable amount, rather than an offering once a year.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings
Prokeimenon: “Thou art a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”
Verse: “The Lord said unto my Lord: ‘Sit Thou at my right hand, until I make Thine enemies the footstool of Thy feet!’” Psalm 109:4, 1
Epistle:The Reading is from the Catholic Epistle of Saint James. (5:10-20)
BRETHREN, take the prophets, who spoke in the Name of the Lord, for an example of enduring afflictions and of longsuffering. Behold, we beatify those who patiently endure. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the conclusion of the Lord; that the Lord is abundantly compassionate and tender in mercies. But above all things, my brethren, do not swear: neither by Heaven nor by earth nor by any other oath; but let your yes be yes and your no be no, that you may not fall under judgment.
Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him chant. Is any among you sick? Let him call upon the priests of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him.
Therefore confess your faults to one another, and pray on behalf of each other, that you may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man avails much in its working. Elias was a man of like passions with us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for the duration of three years and six months. Then he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
Brethren, if any one among you errs from the truth, and someone brings him back; let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death, and will conceal a multitude of sins.
Gospel:The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (9:1-8)
AT THAT TIME, Jesus got into a boat, crossed over and came to His own city. And behold, they brought to Him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith He said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son; your sins are forgiven.” And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.” But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts? For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He then said to the paralytic—“Rise, take up your bed and go home.” And he rose and went home. When the crowds saw it, they marveled, and they glorified God, Who had given such authority to men.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings
Prokeimenon: “Blessed art Thou, O Lord, the God of our Fathers.”
Verse: “For Thou art just in all that Thou hast done to us.” (Daniel 5:26, 7)
Epistle:The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to Titus. (3:8-15)
MY CHILD TITUS, faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire you to affirm confidently, that those who have believed in God may be thoughtful of how to preside in honorable occupations. These things are good and profitable to men. But avoid foolish disputes, and genealogies, and contentions, and controversies about the Law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man who is a heretic after the first and second admonition reject, knowing that such a one is subverted, and sins, being self-condemned.
When I send Artemas to you, or Tychicos give diligence to come to me to Nicopolis; for I have determined to winter there. Set forward Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that they may be lacking in nothing. And let our people also learn how to preside in honorable occupations, so as to help in cases of urgent need, that they should not be unfruitful. All who are with me salute you. Salute those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.
Gospel:The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (5:14-19)
THE LORD SAID TO HIS DISCIPLES: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father Who is in heaven.
Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them, but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
