Visitors, you are always welcome at All Saints.

Let us pray to the Lord: “For the suffering Christians of Syria, Palestine, Iraq, & all of the Middle East, and for those suffering in the Ukraine.”

Nourishment of the Soul: “‘Blessed are the merciful for they will receive mercy’ (Mt. 5:7). The merciful person is he who gives to others what he has himself received from God, whether it be money, or food, or strength, a helpful word, a prayer, or anything else that he has through which he can express his compassion for those in need. At the same time he considers himself a debtor, since he has received more than he is asked to give”(cf. Luke. 6:36).- – St. Peter of Damaskos

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “His sound has gone forth into all the earth.”

Verse: “The heavens declare the glory of God!”  Psalm 18:4,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians. (4:9-16)

Brethren, God has revealed us, the apostles, last of all, as those appointed to death; for we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men.  We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in  Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are glorified, but we are dishonored.  Even to this present hour we both hunger and thirst, we are naked, and are buffeted, and are restless; and we labor, working with our own hands.  While reviled, we bless; while persecuted, we endure; while blasphemed, we exhort; we have become the filth of the world and the off-scouring of all things, even until now.

I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children; for though you have a myriad of tutors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for I begat you in Christ Jesus through the gospel.  I beseech you, therefore, be imitators of me.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (9:9-13)

At that time, as Jesus passed on from there, He saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax office; and He said to him, “Follow me.” and he rose and followed Him.  And as He sat at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and His disciples.  And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”  but when Jesus heard it, He said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance”

             Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 6

When Mary stood at Thy grave, looking for Thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above Thy revered tomb; and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men. Thou led Hades captive and was not tempted thereby. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world, O Thou, Who art risen from the dead, O Lord, glory to Thee..

_______Apolytikion of St. Matthew – Tone 3

O holy Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, intercede with the merciful God, to grant our souls forgiveness of sins.

Kontakion of the Entrance of the Theotokos – Tone 4

The all-pure temple of the Savior, the most precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the treasure-house of the glory of God, today enters the Temple of the Lord, bringing with her the grace which is in the divine Spirit: whom also the angels of God do celebrate in song; for she is the heavenly tabernacle.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “The saints shall boast in glory.”

Verse: “Sing unto the LORD a new song!”  Psalm 149:5,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians. (5:8-19)

Brethren, walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth), proving what is acceptable to the Lord; and have no communion with the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them; for it is a shame even to speak of the things which they do in secret.  But all things when they are exposed are made manifest by the light, for everything that is made manifest is light.  Therefore he says: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon thee.” See then that you walk circumspectly, not as unwise, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.  And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and chanting in your heart to the Lord.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:41-56)

At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus’ feet, he besought Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.  As Jesus went, the people pressed around Him. And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had spent all her living upon physicians, and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him, and touched the fringe of His garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased.  And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the multitudes surround Thee and press upon Thee!  and Thou sayest, ‘Who touched Me?”  But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from Me”  And when the woman saw that she was not hidden she came trembling, and falling down before Him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed.  And Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”  While Jesus was still speaking, a man from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.”  But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well.”  And when Jesus came to the house, He permitted no one to enter with Him, except Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the child.  And all were weeping and bewailing her; but Jesus said, “Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping.”  And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.  But taking her by the hand Jesus called, saying, “Child, arise.” And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and Jesus directed that something should be given her to eat.  And her parents were amazed; but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “How magnified are Thy works, O LORD. In Wisdom hast thou made them all.”

Verse: “Bless the LORD, o MY SOUL!”  Psalm 103:26,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. (2:16-20)

Brethren, knowing that a person is not justified by the works of the Law, but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.  But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? God forbid!  For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a transgressor.  For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God.  I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God Who loved me, and gave Himself up for me.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (16:19-31)

The Lord said, ” There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.  The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom.  The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’  And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.'”

As members of a parish family and the community-at-large, we each have opportunities to interact with co-laborers, friends, and colleagues who are expecting a child.  It would be a great blessing to gather together, men and women, to hear her brief, but special, presentation.

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Second Epistle to Timothy. (2:1-10)

My Child Timothy, be strengthened in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.  And the things which you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to reach others also.  Suffer hardship as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.  No soldier on service entangles himself in the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enrolled him as a soldier.  And if someone also contends in the games, he is not crowned, unless he has contended lawfully.  The husbandman who labors must be the first to partake of the fruits.  Consider what I say; and may the Lord grant you understanding in all things.

Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, of the seed of David, according to my gospel, in which I suffer hardships and even bonds, as a criminal; but the word of God is not bound.  Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:26-39)

At That Time,  Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.  And as He stepped out on land, there met Him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs.  When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and said with a loud voice, “What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech Thee, do not torment me.”  For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.  (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him.  And they begged Jesus not to command them to depart into the abyss.  Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged Jesus to let them enter these.  So he gave them leave.  Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.  When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country.  Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.  And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked Jesus to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so He got into the boat and returned.  The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with Jesus; but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare all that God has done for you.”  And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for him.

Resurrectional Apolytikion  – Tone 3

Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, for the Lord hath done a mighty act with His own arm.  He hath trampled down death by death, and became the first-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of Hades, granting the world the great Mercy.

_______Apolytikion for the Earthquake – Tone 8

O Thou Who didst look upon the earth and make it tremble, deliver us from the fearful threat of earthquake, O Christ our God, and send upon us Thy rich mercies through the intercessions of the Theotokos, O Thou only Lover of mankind.

_______Apolytikion for St. Demetrios the Myrrh-Streaming-Tone 3

Verily, the inhabited world found thee a great help in tribulations and a vanquisher of nations, O fight-bearing one.  Wherefore, as thou didst demolish the arrogance of Lahosh, and on the battlefield didst hearten Nestor, beseech, O Saint Demetrios, Christ God to grant us the Great Mercy.

(Usual) Kontakion in Tone 2

O undisputed intercessor of Christians, the Mediatrix, who is unrejected by the Creator, Turn not away from the voice of our petitions, though we be sinners. Come to us with aid in time, who cry unto thee in faith, for thou art good.  Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who dost ever intercede for those who honor thee.

Great-Martyr Demetrios the Myrrh-Streaming

Commemoration of the Great Earthquake in Constantinople in 740; Venerable Martyr Joasaph of Dionysiou Monastery on Athos

Visitors, you are always welcome at All Saints.

Let us pray to the Lord: “For the suffering Christians of Syria, Palestine, Iraq, & all of the Middle East, and for those suffering in the Ukraine.”

Nourishment of the Soul: “They said of Abba Or that he never lied, nor swore, nor hurt anyone, nor spoke without necessity.” – The Sayings of the Desert Fathers, p. 246

Orthodoxy 101: Deacon Seraphim Moslener will present “Living a Eucharistic Life.”

Communion: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Communion Line: The choir goes first in both lines so members may continue ministering through music during communion. Little Lambs Sunday School follows. The ushers then assist each row from front to back.  Those in the overflow behind the choir may follow adjacent rows.

Sunday School for those in Grades One through 12 meets after Divine Liturgy.

Thanksgiving Baskets at Backstreet Mission: Again this year, Myrrh Bearers will lead the parish in collecting 250 turkey (dry) gravy packets.  In the past, you have responded so enthusiastically that we exceeded the goal. Backstreet thanks you. The deadline is Sunday, November 9th at church, for delivery by the 13th. To date, we’ve collected 10 packets.

Myrrh Bearers (All Saints’ women’s benevolent group) meets at noon after Divine Liturgy.

Updates for the phone directory and the annual pictorial calendar should be sent to Marcia.

Bonfire Sunday at 6:00 pm in the grove: Bring whatever food and drink (non-alcoholic) you would like–you can cook in the fire or bring a picnic supper or just come and hang out with your All Saints family!  Bringing lawn chairs or something else to sit on would probably be a good idea too.  Hope to see you all there! (Contact Charles or Stephanie.)

Presentation by Georg’ann Catalona, Saturday, November 8 at 3:30

Saturday, November 8, is the Feast of the Synaxis of Archangels.  As we anticipate the Advent season and the Nativity of our Lord foretold by the Archangel Gabriel, we will welcome a special guest speaker to All Saints on that day.

Ms. Georg’ann Catalona has been a pioneer and advocate for healthy families in Monroe County for many years, and was recently celebrated as Bloomington Woman of the Year.  From 3:30 – 4:30 pm, Georg’ann will present on some issues and challenges we should all be aware of during the postpartum period in a family.

As members of a parish family and the community-at-large, we each have opportunities to interact with co-laborers, friends, and colleagues who are expecting a child.  It would be a great blessing to gather together, men and women, to hear her brief, but special, presentation.

Light refreshments will be provided.  After a little fellowship, Great Vespers will follow as usual, at 5:00.
