Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “He makes His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire!”

Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, Thou art exceedingly magnified!”

Psalm 103:5,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s  Epistle to the Hebrews. (2:2-10)

Brethren, if the word spoken through angels was confirmed, and every transgression and disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation, which having at first been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard, God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders, and by manifold powers, and by signs and distributions of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will?  For it was not to angels that He subjected the inhabited world to come, of which we are speaking. But one has testified in a certain place, saying, “What is man, that Thou shouldest be mindful of him?  Or the son of man, that Thou shouldest visit him?  Thou didst decrease him a little from the angels; Thou didst crown him with glory and honor, and didst set him over the works of Thy hands; Thou didst put all things in subjection under his feet.”  For in putting ‘all things’ in subjection’ to Him, He left nothing that is not subject to Him.  But now we do not see yet ‘all things in subjection’ to Him. But we behold Him ‘who has been decreased a little from the angels,’ even Jesus, because of the suffering of death, ‘crowned with glory and honor,’ so that by the grace of God He should taste of death on behalf of every one.  For it was fitting that He, for Whom are all things, and through Whom are all things, in bringing many sons into glory, the Leader of their salvation would be perfected through sufferings.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:41-56)

At that time, there came to Jesus a man named Jairus, who was ruler of the synagogue; and falling at Jesus’ feet he besought Him to come to his house, for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.  As Jesus went, the people pressed round Him.  And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had spent all her living upon physicians, and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him, and touched the fringe of His garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased.  And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched Me?”  When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the multitudes surround Thee and press upon Thee!  And Thou sayest, ‘Who touched Me?'” But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from Me.”  And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before Him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed.  And Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”  While Jesus was still speaking, a man from the ruler’s house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.”  But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well.” And when Jesus came to the house, He permitted no one to enter with Him, except Peter and James and John, and the father and mother of the child.  And all were weeping and bewailing her; but Jesus said, “Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping.”  And they laughed at Him, knowing that she was dead.  But taking her by the hand Jesus called, saying, “Child, arise.”  And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and Jesus directed that something should be given her to eat.  And her parents were amazed; but He charged them to tell no one what had happened.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 6

When Mary stood at Thy grave, looking for Thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above Thy revered tomb; and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men. Thou led Hades captive and wast not tempted thereby.  Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world, O Thou, Who art risen from the dead, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion of the Archangels – Tone 4

Supreme Commanders of the Hosts of the Heavens, we, the unworthy, importune and beseech you that by your supplications ye encircle us in the shelter of the wings of your immaterial glory; guarding us who now fall down and cry to you with fervor: Deliver us from dangers of all kinds, as the great marshals of the heavenly hosts on high.

Kontakion of the Entrance of the Theotokos – Tone 4

The all-pure temple of the Savior, the most precious bridal chamber and Virgin, the treasure-house of the glory of God, today enters the Temple of the Lord, bringing with her the grace which is in the divine Spirit: whom also the angels of God do celebrate in song; for she is the heavenly tabernacle.

Koinonikon (Communion Hymn) – Tone 8

He makes His angels spirits, and His  ministers a flame of fire. Alleluia.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

During Youth Month, our teens will read the Epistle and serve as ushers                           Prokeimenon: “How magnified are Thy works, O Lord!

In Wisdom hast Thou made them all.”

Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul!”  Psalm 103:26,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. (2:16-20)

Brethren, knowing that a person is not justified by the works of the Law, but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.  But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin?  God forbid!  For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a transgressor.  For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God.  I have been crucified with Christ,  nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, Who loved me, and gave Himself up for me.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:26-39)

At That Time, Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.  And as He stepped out on land, there met Him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs.  When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, and said with a loud voice, “What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?  I beseech Thee, do not torment me.”  For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. [For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.]  Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?”  And he said, “Legion”, for many demons had entered him.  And they begged Jesus not to command them to depart into the abyss.  Now a large heard of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged Jesus to let them enter these.  So He gave them leave.  Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.  When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country.  Then people  went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.  And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed.  Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked Jesus to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so He got into the boat and returned.  The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with Jesus; but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare all that God has done for you.”  And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for him.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 4

Having learned the joyful message of the Resurrection from the angel, the women disciples of the Lord cast from them their parental condemnation. And proudly broke the news to the Disciples, saying: Death hath been spoiled; Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy.

Apolytikion of SS. Marcian & Martyrios the Notaries – Tone 4

Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee, received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God.  For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons’ strengthless presumption.  O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

During Youth Month, our teens will read the Epistle and serve as ushers.

Prokeimenon: “His sound has gone forth into all the earth.”

Verse: “The heavens declare the glory of God!”  Psalm 18:4,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians. (4:5-11, 14-16)

Brethren, walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.  Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every one.  All my state shall Tychicos make known to you, the beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord; whom I have sent to you for this very purpose, that he might know your state, and comfort your hearts; together with Onesimos, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you.  They shall make known to you all things that are done here.

My fellow-prisoner, Aristarchos, salutes you, and Mark, the nephew of Barnabas (from whom you received commandments: if he comes to you, receive him), and Jesus, who is called Justus, who are of the circumcision.  These are my only fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have become a comfort to me.  Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, salutes you, always striving for you in prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. For I bear him witness, that he has a great zeal for you, and for those in Laodicea, and for those in Hierapolis.

Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas salute you.  Salute the brethren who are in Laodicea, and  Nymphas, and the church that is in his house.  And when this epistle is read among you, make sure that it is read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and that you likewise read the epistle from Laodicea.  And say to Archippos: “Behold the ministry which you have received in the Lord, so that you may fulfill it.”  The salutation by my hand, Paul!  Remember  my bonds.  Grace be with you. Amen.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (10:16-21)

The Lord said, “He who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” The Seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Thy Name!”  And Jesus said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you.  Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”  In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the spirit and said, “I thank Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou hast hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was Thy gracious will.”

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

During Youth Month, our teens will read the Epistle and serve as ushers.

Prokeimenon: “Blessed art Thou, O Lord, the God of our Fathers.”

Verse: “For Thou art just in all that Thou hast done to us!”  Daniel 3:26-27 (OSB)

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Epistle to Titus. (3:8-15)

My Child Titus, faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire you to affirm confidently, that those who have believed in God may be thoughtful of how to preside in honorable occupations.  These things are good and profitable to men.  But avoid foolish disputes, and genealogies, and contentions, and controversies about the Law; for they are unprofitable and vain.  A man who is a heretic after the first and second admonition reject, knowing that such a one is subverted, and sins, being self-condemned.  When I send Artemas to you, or Tychicos, give diligence to come to me to Nicopolis; for I have determined to winter there.  Set forward Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that they may be lacking in nothing.  And let our people also learn how to preside in honorable occupations, so as to help in cases of urgent need, that they should not be unfruitful.  All who are with me salute you.  Salute those who love us in the faith.  Grace be with you all. Amen.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:5-15)

The Lord spoke this parable: “A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it.  And some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it.  And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.  And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it.  And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold.”  And when His Disciples asked Him what his parable meant, Jesus said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.  Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.  The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts that they may not believe and  be saved.  And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.  And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.  And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience.”  As Jesus said this, He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 2

When Thou didst submit Thyself unto death, O Thou deathless and immortal One, then Thou didst destroy hell with Thy Godly power.  And when Thou didst raise the dead from beneath the earth, all the powers of Heaven did cry aloud unto Thee; O Christ, Thou giver of life, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion of the Holy Fathers – Tone 8

Thou, O Christ, art our God of exceeding praise, Who didst establish our Holy Fathers as luminous stars upon earth, and through them didst guide us unto the true Faith; O most merciful One, glory to Thee.

Nourishment of the Soul“Though a man may be found in a weak state, that does not at all mean that he has been abandoned by God. On the cross, the Lord Jesus Christ was in trouble, as the world sees things. But when the sinful world considered Him to be completely destroyed, in fact He was victorious over death and Hades. The Lord did not promise us positions as victors as a reward for righteousness, but told us, ‘In the world you will have tribulation — but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.’” (Jn. 16:33). — St. John of San Francisco

Jennifer Tatlock departed this life unexpectedly on Tuesday following complications with back surgery.  Fr. Peter Jon will serve her funeral at noon on Monday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford, followed by burial at Valhalla Memory Gardens in Bloomington.  She has been a member of All Saints since 2007.  May her soul dwell where the just repose!

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

October is Youth Month when our youths read the Epistle and serve as ushers.

Prokeimenon: “Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us.”

Verse: “Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous!”  Psalm 32:22,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians. (9:6-11)

Brethren, the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly; and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.  Let each one do according to what he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly, or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.  And God is able to make all grace abound to you; that you, having always all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.  As it is written: “He has scattered abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.”  Now He, who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food, will supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the harvest of your righteousness.  You will be enriched in all things for every generosity, which works through us thanksgiving to God.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (6:31-36)

The Lord said: “As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.  If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?  For even sinners love those who love them.  And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?  for even sinners do the same.  And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you?  Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.  But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish.  Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 1

While the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers were guarding Thy most pure body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world.  For which cause the heavenly powers cried aloud unto Thee, O Giver of Life. Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ; Glory to Thy Kingdom,; Glory to Thy Providence, O Thou Who alone art the lover of mankind.
