Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “The Lord will give strength unto His people.”

Verse: ” Bring unto the Lord, ye sons of God; bring unto the Lord glory and honor!” – Psalm 28:11,1

Epistle: The Reading from  St. Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians. (6:1-10)

Brethren, since we are fellow workers, we entreat you also not to receive the grace of God in vain (for He says, “At an acceptable season I hearkened unto thee, and in a day of salvation I helped thee”; behold, now is ” the day of salvation”), giving no occasion of stumbling  in anything, that the ministry is not blamed, but in everything commending ourselves, as ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in vigils, in fasts, in purity, in knowledge, in longsuffering, in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in love unfeigned, in the word of truth, in the power of God; by the weapons of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, by glory and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true; as unknown, and yet well-known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (7:11-16)

At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and many of His disciples and a great crowd went with Him.  As He drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her.  And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.”  And He came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And Jesus said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”  And the dead man sat up, and began to speak.  And Jesus gave him to his mother.  Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited His people!”

Divine Liturgy Variables

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 7

Thou didst shatter death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open paradise to the thief; Thou didst turn the sadness of the ointment-bearing women into joy. And didst bid Thine Apostles proclaim a warning, that Thou hast risen, O Christ, granting to the world the Great Mercy.

Apolytikion of St. James, the Son of Alphaeus – Tone 3

O holy apostle James, intercede with the merciful God to grant to our souls forgiveness of sins.

Kontakion for Ordinary Sundays – Tone 2

O Undisputed intercessor of Christians, O Mediatrix who is unrejected by the Creator; turn not away from the voice of our petitions, though we be sinners.  Come to us with aid in time, who cry unto thee in faith, for thou art good.  Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “ O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance.”

Verse: ” Unto Thee, O Lord, will I cry, O my God!” – Psalm 27:9,1

Epistle: The Reading from  St. Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians. (4:6-15)

Brethren, seeing that it is the God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, the same also shone in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the exceeding greatness of power is from God, and not from us.  We are pressed on every way, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; smitten down, but not destroyed; always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body.  For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our mortal flesh.  So then death is working in us, but life in you.

But having in us the same spirit of faith, according to that which is written, “I believed, and therefore I spoke,” we also believe, and therefore we also speak, knowing that the One who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up through Jesus, and will make us stand together with you. For all things are for your sakes, that the grace, which is multiplied through the thanksgiving of many, may abound to the glory of God.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (6:31-36)

The Lord said: “As you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.  If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?  For even sinners love those who love them.  And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you?  For even sinners do the same.  And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you?  Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.  But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish.  Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”

Divine Liturgy Variables

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 6

When Mary stood at Thy grave, looking for Thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above Thy revered tomb; and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men. Thou led Hades captive and wast not tempted thereby.  Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world, O Thou, Who art risen from the dead, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion of St. Cyprian the Confessor – Tone 4

By choosing the Apostles’ way of life, thou hast succeeded to their throne. Inspired by God, thou didst find the way to divine contemplation through the practice of virtue. After teaching the Word of Truth without error, thou didst defend the Faith to the very shedding of thy blood, O Hieromartyr Cyprian. Entreat the Lord our God to save our souls.

To the Parish and to your friends,

I want to extend an invitation to the parish to a concert that I’m involved in next Wednesday night (October 5th) at 8 pm. (I realize that it unfortunately conflicts with Orthodoxy 101.)

It’s a choral-orchestral work in English that tells the life of St. Nicholas of Myra. My friend and colleague in the choral department is conducting it, and I’ve been helping prepare the chorus.  It promises to be very exciting and even worshipful, which is not always easy to come by.

The poster is on the hall bulletin board.

In Christ,
Caleb John Lewis

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Thou, O Lord, shalt keep us and shalt preserve us.”

Verse: ” Save me, O Lord, for the godly man is no more!” – Psalm 11:7,1

Epistle: The Reading from  St. Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians. (1:21-2:4)

Brethren, the One who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, is God; Who has also sealed us, and has given us the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.  Moreover, I call God for a witness upon my soul, that in order to spare you, I did not yet come to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith, but we are fellow workers of your joy, for you are established in the faith.  But I determined this within myself, that I would not come again to you with sorrow.  For if I make you sorry, who then is the one who makes me glad, but the same who is made sorry by me?  And I wrote this very thing to you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from those in whom I ought to rejoice, having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.  For out of much affliction and anguish of  heart I wrote to you with many tears, not that you should be made sorry, but that you might know the love which I have more abundantly for you.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (5:1-11)

At that time, Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret.  And He saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.  Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, Jesus asked him to put out a little from the land.  And He sat down and taught the people from the boat.  And when Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”  And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing!  But at Thy word I will let down the nets.”  And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them.  And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.  But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.”  For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish, which they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon.  And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men.”  And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 5

Let us believers praise and worship the Word; co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation. For, He took pleasure in ascending the Cross in the flesh to suffer death; and to raise the dead by His glorious Resurrection.

Apolytikion of St. Euphrosyne – Tone  8

Through thee, the divine likeness was securely preserved, O mother Euphrosyne; for thou didst carry the cross and follow Christ. By example and precept thou didst teach us to ignore the body, because it is perishable, and to attend to the concerns of the undying soul. Therefore, doth thy soul rejoice with the angels.

Sunday after the Elevation of the Holy Cross

Eumenios the wonderworker, bishop of Gortyna; Martyr Ariadne of Phrygia

Visitors, you are always welcome here and invited to all services and events at All Saints.

Nourishment of the Soul: “Do not think that the Lord has abandoned you. No! He is always with you and invisibly sustains you, even when you forget Him.  He will not burden you with trials beyond your capacity.  Fear nothing, but with total humbleness and devotion bear your cross and pray. He is the gentlest of fathers that could be wished for.  If on occasion He allows His faithful servants to be tempted, it is only to remind them of their feebleness and to completely cleanse their hearts from pride.  In our hearts is where He intends to reside with His Son and His Holy Spirit. — St. Innocent of Alaska

Plan ahead to attend or help with our annual Festival, scheduled for October 8th.  Check with Nina for indoor baked goods, with John or Amal to help with outdoor food booths, Don for cleaning tables, Charles for the Children’s area, Lucia and Lisa for kitchen work, Vicki for silent auction baskets, Marcia and Father for general questions. You may wonder how the income is used.  Each year the festival committee considers the community’s  greatest need. Last year the receipts allowed us to save adequate funds to pay for this year’s festival and to make a healthy contribution to the Temple Fund. The decision for this year will be made later.

Orthodoxy 101: On Wednesday, September 21st, John Craton will present the lesson “Apologetics”. A small pitch-in is usually donated by a few of those attending.

Church Van: If you know  a student who needs a ride, please direct them to Subdeacon Jon Weber or to Howard Webb.

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession. Deacon cannot bless at the cup.

Deacon Lucas Christensen, formerly of this parish, will be ordained today into the Holy Priesthood  at Holy Trinity in Carmel. Fr. Peter Jon and many parishioners will attend. In Father’s absence, Deacon Lawrence will serve a Eucharistic Typika. The service begins at 10:00 am and is not preceded by Matins.

On September 30, All Saints hosts the Indianapolis chapter of Orthodox Christians for Life for Great Vespers of the Protection of the Theotokos, followed by dinner and a presentation.

Alice Piercefield continues to recover from her kidney surgery in Indianapolis. Please see Charles Coats for details of what may be helpful.

Brethren, knowing that a person is not justified by the works of the Law, but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.  But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin?  God forbid!  For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a transgressor.  For I through the law died to the law,  that I might live to God.  I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself up for me.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. (8:34-9:1)

The Lord said, “If any man would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospel’s will save it.  For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?  For what can a man give in return for his soul?  For whoever is ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”  And He said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Kingdom of God come with power.”
