Memory Eternal, Kh. Stefanie

Beloved of All Saints:

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Khouria Stephanie Yazghe, who served faithfully and tirelessly with her husband Fr. Anthony for many years in Terre Haute, died suddenly Thursday morning. While we do not mourn as those without hope, those of us who knew her will certainly miss her. May her soul dwell with the blessed, and may her memory be eternal!

The Placing of the Theotokos’ Robe in Blachernae

Juvenaly, archbishop of Jerusalem; the New-martyrs of Samothrace; repose of Job, first patriarch of Moscow; Archbishop John Maximovitch of Shanghai and San Francisco

All Saints Parish is blessed by our many visitors. Please feel welcome each time you visit.

Nourishment of the Soul: “What are the ‘Acts of the Apostles’?” he asks.  They are the acts of Christ, which the Holy Apostles do by the power of Christ, or better still: they do them by Christ Who is in them and acts through them. “And what are the ‘Lives of the Saints’?” They are nothing else but a certain kind of continuation of the ‘Acts of the Apostles.’ In them is found the same Gospel, the same life, the same truth, the same righteousness, the same love, the same faith, the same eternity, the same ‘power from on high,’ the same God and Lord.  For the Lord Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever (Heb.13:8): the same for all peoples of all times, distributing the same gifts and the same Divine Energies to all who believe in Him.  St. Justin Popovich of Chelije

Coffee Hour Foods: Contributors this Sunday are those whose last names start with A-Ba.

Do you Know as we approach the Holy Cup, we are reverently focused on what we are about to receive, looking neither to the left nor the right, not visiting with others along the way.  We cross our arms, right over left.  Some kiss the Chalice gently while others do not.  We await the final words of the priest or deacon at the time we have received the Holy Eucharist, “…unto the forgiveness of sins and unto life everlasting.”  We accept blessed bread from the altar servers and return to stand in the presence of Christ.  It is good to offer blessed bread to those who have not received the Eucharist.

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but  have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Women’s Care Center:  Donations of items for babies age 1 year and younger and for their mothers can be brought to the church. Patricia Finchum (representing Orthodox Christians for Life) will get them to the center to help women who might otherwise have aborted their babies.

Tomorrow on Monday, July 3: Those who are able will  begin gathering at 7:00 for the Annual Independence Day BBQ and Fireworks. The church will provide meat for the grill, but side dishes and desserts should be donated by those attending. Fireworks will light up the sky as darkness approaches. Friends of your family are invited too.

 Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”

Verse:  “For He has regarded the humility of His servant.”  Luke 1:46,48

Epistle: The Reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews. (9:1-7)

  (For the Theotokos’ Robe)

Brethren, even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lamp stand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people.

Gospel: The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (8:5-13)

At that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching Him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress.” And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion answered Him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard him, He marveled, and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; be it done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 3

Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, for the Lord hath done a mighty act with His own arm.  He hath trampled down death by death, and become the first-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of Hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.

Apolytikion for the Placing of the Theotokos’ Robe – Tone 8

O Ever-Virgin Theotokos, shelter of mankind, thou hast bestowed upon thy people a mighty investure, even thine immaculate body’s raiment and sash, which by thy seedless childbirth have remained incorrupt; for in thee, nature and time are made new. Wherefore, we implore thee to grant peace to the world, and Great Mercy to our souls.

Kontakion for the Placing of the Theotokos’ Robe – Tone 4

O godly shelter that dost cover all mankind, * the sacred robe that covered thy sacred body * hast thou bestowed on all the faithful graciously, * O pure Virgin, as a robe * of divine incorruption. * As we celebrate with love * its august deposition, * we cry to thee with faith, O graced of God: * Rejoice, O Lady, thou boast of the Christian race.

Visitors, we warmly welcome you to all services of the church.

Nourishment of the Soul: “You find yourself in a darkened room, and you move your hands so as to try to brush away the darkness which, of course, doesn’t move.  If you open a window and light enters, the darkness disappears. The same happens with study.  The Holy Scripture, the lives of the Saints, and the writings of the Fathers are the light that chases away the darkness of the soul.” – St. Porphyrios the Kapsokalyvite

 Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “The Lord is my strength and my song.”

Verse:  “The Lord has chastened me sorely!” –  Psalm  117:14,18

Epistle: The Reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans. (5:1-11)

Brethren, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Through Him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God.  More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.  While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  Why, one will hardly die for a righteous man—though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die.  But God shows His love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.  Since, therefore, we are now justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God.  For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.  Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received our reconciliation.

Gospel: The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (6:22-33)

The Lord said, “The eye is the lamp of the body.  So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness.  If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!  No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and mammon.  Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; nor about your body, what you shall put on.  Is not the soul more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of heaven: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his stature?  And why are you anxious about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon himself in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O men of little faith?  Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”

Divine Liturgy Variables

Do you Know: The choir or chanters  follow the clergy’s lead,  and then the people follow the choir or chanters in the responses and hymns of the services.  This avoids an echo effect, and lets the parish be one angelic voice.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 2

When Thou didst submit Thyself unto death, O Thou deathless and immortal One, then Thou didst destroy hell with Thy Godly power.  And when Thou didst raise the dead from beneath the earth, all the powers of Heaven did cry aloud unto Thee; O Christ, Thou giver of life, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist – Tone 4

O prophet and Forerunner of Christ God’s coming to us, * all we who with longing now extol thee are at a loss to honor thee worthily. * For thy mother’s barrenness and father’s long silence, * by thine all-renowned and hallowed birth, were both ended, * and the Incarnation of the Son of God is preached unto all the world.

Kontakion for Ordinary Sundays – Tone 2

O Undisputed intercessor of Christians, O Mediatrix who is unrejected by the Creator; turn not away from the voice of our petitions, though we be sinners.  Come to us with aid in time, who cry unto thee in faith, for thou art good. Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who didst ever intercede for those who honor thee.

    Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us.”

Verse:  “Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous!” –  Psalm  32:22,1

Epistle: The Reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans. (2:10-16)

Brethren, glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek.  For God shows no partiality.  All who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law.  For it is not the hearers of the Law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the Law who will be justified.  When Gentiles who have not the Law do by nature what the Law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the Law.  They show that what the Law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

Gospel: The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (4:18-23)

At that time, as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.  And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”  Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.  And going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them.  Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.  And He went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the Kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

Do you Know: Candles are an important part of Orthodox worship. Orthodox typically light candles when coming into the Church. We light them as we pray, making an offering (as we are able) to accompany our prayers. You may have noticed two candle prayer boxes at All Saints.  Typically the one in the narthex receives your prayers for the living.  The one in the front is for prayers remembering those departed.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 1

While the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers were guarding Thy most pure body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world.  For which cause the heavenly powers cried aloud unto Thee, O Giver of Life. Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ; Glory to Thy Kingdom,; Glory to Thy Providence, O Thou Who alone art the lover of mankind.

  Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “God is wonderful among His saints.”

Verse:  “Bless God in the congregations!” –  Psalm  67:35,26

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews. (11:33-12:2)

Brethren, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.  Women received their dead by resurrection.  Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life.  Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment.  They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, ill-treated—of whom the world was not worthy—wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.  And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.  Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfection of our faith.

Gospel: The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to  St. Matthew.

(10:32-33, 37-38; 19:27-30)

The Lord said to His disciples, “Everyone who acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father Who is in heaven; but whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before My Father Who is in heaven.  He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.”  Then Peter said in reply, “Lo, we have left everything and followed Thee.  What then shall we have?”  Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the New World, when the Son of Man shall sit on His glorious throne, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.  And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My Name’s sake, will receive a hundred fold, and inherit eternal life.  But many that are first will be last, and the last first.”

As first-fruits of our nature to the Planter of created things, * the world presenteth the God-bearing martyred Saints in offering unto Thee, O Lord. * Through their earnest entreaties, * keep Thy Church in deep peace and divine tranquility, * through the pure Theotokos, O Thou Who art greatly merciful.

Koinonikon (Communion Hymn) for All Saints – Tone 8

Rejoice in the Lord, O ye just; praise becometh the upright. Alleluia.
