The Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Visitors, we are blessed by your presence.

Nourishment of the Soul: “Do not think about or do anything without a spiritual purpose, whereby it is done for God.  For if you travel without purpose, you shall labor in vain.” – St. Mark the Ascetic

Do You Know that grapes are blessed and distributed at the end of the Transfiguration Liturgy? The church will provide grapes, but you are also invited to add to the ‘harvest’ on the memorial table.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “O Lord, how manifold are Thy works; in Wisdom hast Thou made them all .”

Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul!” – Psalm 103: 24,1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. (1:10-17)

Brethren, be the more zealous to confirm your call and election, for if you do this you will never fall; so there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Therefore, I intend always to remind you of these things, though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.  I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to arouse you by way of reminder, since I know that the putting off of my body will be soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ showed me.  And I will see to it that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.  For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.  For when He received honor and glory from God the Father and the voice was borne to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased,” we heard this voice borne from heaven, for we were with Him on the holy mountain.  And we have the prophetic word made surer.  You will do well to pay attention to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

Gospel: The Reading is  from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.  (17:1-9)

At that time, Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart.  And He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became white as light.  And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him.  And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is well that we are here; if Thou wilt, I will make three booths here, one for Thee and one for Moses and one for Elijah.”  He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased; hear Him.”  When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe.  But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.”  And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.  And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of man is risen from the dead.”

Entrance Hymn: Save us, O Son of God, Who wast transfigured on Mount Tabor, who sing to Thee. Alleluia.

Apolytikion of Transfiguration – Tone 7

Kontakion for the Transfiguration – Tone 7

Thou wast transfigured on the mount, and Thy Disciples, in so far as they were able, beheld Thy glory, O Christ our God; so that, when they should see Thee crucified, they would remember that all Thy suffering was voluntary, and could declare to all the world that Thou art truly the effulgent Splendor of the Father.

Megalynarion for the Feast – Tone 8

Now hath been heard that which hath never been heard before; for the Son, Who is from the Virgin without father, hath been testified to in glory by the voice of the Father; for He Himself is God and Man together unto the end of the ages.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians. (1:10-17)

Brethren, I appeal to you, by the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissension among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.  For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren.  What I mean is that each one of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.”  Is Christ divided?  Was Paul crucified for you?  Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?  I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest anyone should say that you were baptized in my name.  (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas.  Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.)  For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the Gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Gospel: The Reading is  from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.  (14:14-22)

At that time, when Jesus went ashore he saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick.  When it was evening, the disciples came to Him and said, “This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves.”  Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.”  They said to Him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.”  And He said, “Bring them here to Me.”  Then He ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish He looked up to Heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.  And they all ate and were satisfied.  And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.  And those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.  Then Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before Him to the other side, while He dismissed the crowds.

 Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “O Lord, save Thy people, and bless Thine inheritance.”

Verse: “To Thee, O Lord, have I cried, O my God.” Psalm 27: 9,1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans. (15:1-7)

Brethren, we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves; let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to edify him. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached thee fell on me.” For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures, we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Gospel: The Reading is  from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.  (9:27-35)

At that time, as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud: “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” When He entered the house, the blind men came to Him; and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, “See that no one knows it.” But they went away and spread His fame through all that district. As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to Him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.” And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity.

Divine Liturgy Variables

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 6

When Mary stood at Thy grave, looking for Thy sacred body, angelic powers shone above Thy revered tomb; and the soldiers who were to keep guard became as dead men. Thou led Hades captive and wast not tempted thereby.  Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst give life to the world, O Thou, Who art risen from the dead, O Lord, glory to Thee.

Kontakion for Ordinary Sundays – Tone 2

O Undisputed intercessor of Christians, O Mediatrix who is unrejected by the Creator; turn not away from the voice of our petitions, though we be sinners.  Come to us with aid in time, who cry unto thee in faith, for thou art good. Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who didst ever intercede for those who honor thee.

All Saints Parish is blessed by our many visitors. Please feel welcome each time you visit.

Nourishment of the Soul: “You who believe when you are well, see to it that you do not fall away from God in the time of misfortune.” – St. John of Kronstadt

Do you know: There was a time when people put on their ‘Sunday best’ to go to church.  Though God does not demand us to ‘dress up’ for Him (as though He is in any way impressed by our external appearance), the fact is, as followers of Christ in all areas of our life, we should offer Christ our ‘best’ and not just our ‘leftovers’. Our dress should always, especially at church, be becoming of a Christian.  We dress modestly, not in a flashy way that merely brings attention to ourselves.

 Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Blessed art Thou, O Lord, the God of our Fathers.”

Verse: “For Thou art just in all that Thou hast done for us.” Daniel 3:26-27

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Letter to Titus. (3:8-15)

Titus, my son, the saying is sure. I desire you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed in God may be careful to apply themselves to good deeds; these are excellent and profitable to men. But avoid stupid controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels over the law, for they are unprofitable and futile. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. And let our people learn to apply themselves to good deeds, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not to be unfruitful. All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

Gospel: The Reading is  from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.   (5:14-19)

The Lord said to His Disciples: “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father Who is in heaven. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them, but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 5

Let us believers praise and worship the Word; co-eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation. For, He took pleasure in ascending the Cross in the flesh to suffer death; and to raise the dead by His glorious Resurrection.

Apolytikion of the Holy Fathers -Tone 8

Thou, O Christ, art our God of exceeding praise Who didst establish our Holy Fathers as luminous stars upon earth, and through them didst guide us unto the true Faith, O most merciful One, glory to Thee.

Hieromartyr Pankratios, bishop of Taormina in Sicily; Martyrs Andrew and Probus; Venerable Dionysios the Orator, first settler of Small St. Anne Skete on Athos, and his disciple Venerable Metrophanes

All Saints Parish is blessed by our many visitors. Please feel welcome each time you visit.

Nourishment of the Soul: “Those who sit in solitude and are quiet have escaped from three wars: hearing, speaking, seeing; yet against one thing shall they continually battle: that is, their own heart.” – St. Anthony the Great

Coffee Hour Foods: Contributors this Sunday are those whose last names start with Be-F.

Do you know that church expenses continue throughout the summer even though some of us are vacationing? Please consider using www.allsaintsbloomington.org  to support the work of the church. Some parishioners are finding it easy and convenient to use.

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but  have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Icon of the Protection of the Theotokos: So far, $343 has been given toward the painting of an 11×17 icon of the Protection of the Theotokos.  Our goal is $700 – we’re half way there! This icon will be displayed at the Akathist of the Protection of the Theotokos on the last Friday of each month, and will be the patronal icon for our local chapter of Orthodox Christians for Life, whose goal is the preservation of life in the womb and continuing care and prayerful support of parents & babies in need.

Women’s Care Center:  Donations of items for babies age 1 year and younger and for their mothers can be brought to the church. Patricia Finchum (representing Orthodox Christians for Life) will get them to the center to help women who might otherwise have chosen abortion instead of life. See the bulletin board for more information.

Housekeeping: Thank you for your many contributions of food each Sunday and each special day. However, serving plates, plastics, and cookware have been forgotten and left here! There is quite an accumulation in the kitchen storage area. Please take a look. If the shelves get too full, we may have to consider donating to Goodwill! But, if your cupboard is bare, please check ours!

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “O Lord, how magnificent are Your works. You have made all things in Wisdom.”

Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul.”  Psalm 103: 24, 1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans. (10:1-10)

Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that it may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, that everyone who has faith may be justified. Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. But the righteousness based on faith says: Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into Heaven?” (that is, to bring Christ down) or “Who will descend into the abyss?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved.

Gospel: The Reading is  from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.  (8:28-9:1)

At that time, when Jesus came to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met Him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. And behold, they cried out, “What have we to do to Thee, O Son of God?  Art Thou come here to torment us before the time?” Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged Him, “If Thou castest us out, send us away into the herd of swine.” And He said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat He crossed over and came to His own city.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 4

Having learned the joyful message of the Resurrection from the angel, the women disciples of the Lord cast from them their parental condemnation. And proudly broke the news to the Disciples, saying: Death hath been spoiled; Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy.
