If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church. Approach to the cup starts at the front rows; the choir and preschool go first.

The Annual Business meeting is today following the Divine Liturgy. New parish council members will be elected, annual reports will be distributed, and Father Peter Jon and others will be available to answer questions about parish plans and projects. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. All who attend All Saints are welcome, but only members, 18 and older, vote for parish council members. A pitch-in meal follows.

Help fill the Gift Bag! Bring children’s hats, gloves, mittens, and scarves to donate to local needy school children in the Bloomington area. Cathy Alexander is carrying on our beloved Alex’s tradition and memory with this effort. Thanks!

Monthly Crafting Workshop began yesterday on Saturday at 3:30. Everyone is welcome to bring their crafty projects and ideas and to fellowship with one another while working on them in the Fellowship Hall. There will be discussions about which crafts could be offered for sale by the Myrrh Bearers at our next Festival on Fairfax. Emily Wood is coordinating these monthly meetings.

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Second Letter to the Corinthians. (4:6-15)
For St. Menas

Brethren, it is the God Who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” Who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. While we live we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we too believe, and so we speak, knowing that He Who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read?” And the lawyer answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” And Jesus said to him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will live.” But the lawyer, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. Trunk or Treat at All Saints: On Wednesday, October 31st, following Daily Vespers, kids are invited to Trunk-or-Treat in the All Saints parking lot. Adults who wish to participate will bring candy or goodies to be distributed to kids visiting cars from 6:45-7:30pm. Kids may wear costumes and are encouraged to bring friends. It’s like trick-or-treating, only the kids knock on your trunk instead of your front door! Historical Significance: A thousand years ago, on the eve of All Saints (November 1st on the Roman calendar), Christian monks in Rome would prepare hot vats of stew on street corners and distribute the food to the poor and needy who came to them. Modern day trick-or-treating is a childlike descendant of this age-old Christian practice of love.

Special Olympics: Thank you to all who gave generously to the Special Olympics collection last Sunday. The SOYO teens collected $250 which has been sent to the archdiocese. More bookmarks are in the hallway.

Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the Law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all, who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had spent all her living upon physicians, and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him, and touched the fringe of His garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased. And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the multitudes surround Thee and press upon Thee! And Thou sayest, ‘Who touched Me?’” But Jesus said, “Someone touched Me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from Me.” And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before Him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. We have the unique opportunity to occupy the Guest House (24 beds) that weekend, and attend services Friday evening, Saturday morning and evening and Sunday morning. There will be time to relax in the Guest House, shop in the Gift Shop, take walks on the grounds, and enjoy the delicious meals between the services. There is no charge, but plan to make a donation to the monastery. We will take the All Saints van (seats 12) and beyond that, will help arrange car sharing. Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Letter to the Galatians. (2:16-20)

Brethren, you know that a man is not justified by works of the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ. Even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the Law, because by works of the Law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the Law died to the Law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ Who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me.

At that time, Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. And as He stepped out on land, there met Him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, “What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech Thee, do not torment me.” For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. [For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.] Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. And they begged Jesus not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged Jesus to let them enter these. So He gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Food Pantry: Thank you for continuing to fill the pantry. Paper goods and almost everything else is needed. Ravioli was a hit and packages of dry mac/cheese boxes are always selected. (We have peanut butter and beans.)

And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold.” And when His Disciples asked Him what this parable meant, Jesus said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience.” As Jesus said this, He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”
