Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Exalt ye the Lord our God.”

Verse: “The Lord is King, let the peoples tremble!”  Psalm 98:5,1

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians. (1:18-24)

Brethren, the word of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing; but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God.  For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning  I will bring to naught.”  Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age?  Has not God turned the wisdom of the world into foolishness?  For, since the world in the wisdom of God did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God though the foolishness of preaching to save those who believe.  For Jews ask for signs, and Greeks seek wisdom; but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Greeks; but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the Power of God and  the wisdom of God.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. John. (19:6-11,13-20,25-28,30-35)

At that time, the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death.  And they came to Pontius Pilate saying, “Crucify Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no crime in Him.”  The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die, because He has made Himself the Son of God.”  When Pilate heard these words, he was the more afraid; he entered the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where art Thou from?”  But Jesus gave no answer.  Pilate therefore said to Him, “Wilt Thou not speak to me?  Knowest Thou not that I have power to release Thee, and power to crucify Thee?”  Jesus answered him, “You would have no power over Me unless it had been given you from above.

When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called “The Pavement,” and in Hebrew, “Gabbatha.”  Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about the sixth hour.  He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” They cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” Then he handed Him over to them to be crucified.

So they took Jesus and led Him away, and He went out, bearing His own Cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew “Golgotha.”  There they crucified Him, and with Him two others, one on either side, with Jesus between them.  Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the Cross; it read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”  Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.

Now standing by the Cross of Jesus were His mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene.  When Jesus saw His mother, and the Disciple whom He loved standing near, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”  Then He said to the Disciple, “Behold, your mother!”  And from that hour the Disciple took her to his own home.  After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now fulfilled, said, “It is finished;” and He bowed His head and gave up the spirit.

Since it was the Day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.  So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him; but when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.  But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.  He who saw it has borne witness–his testimony is true.     .

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Thou, O Lord, shalt keep us and shalt preserve us.”

Verse: “Save me,  O Lord, for the godly man is no more!”  Psalm 11:7,1)

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s Second Epistle to the Corinthians. (1:21-2:4)

Brethren, The One who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, is God; who has also sealed us, and has given us the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.  Moreover, I call God for a witness upon my soul, that in order to spare you, I did not yet come to Corinth.  Not that we lord it over your faith, but we are fellow workers of your joy, for you are established in the faith.  But I determined this within myself, that I would not come again to you with sorrow.  For if I make you sorry, who then is the one who makes me glad, but the same who is made sorry by me?  And I wrote this very thing to you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from those in whom I ought to rejoice, having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all.  For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears, not that you should be made sorry, but that you might know the love which I have more abundantly for you.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (22:2-14)

The Lord spoke this parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come.  Again he sent other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.’ But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them.  The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy.  Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.’  And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.  But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?’  And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”     .

Supreme Commander of the Hosts of Heavens, we, the unworthy, importune and beseech thee that by thy supplications thou encircle us in the shelter of the wings of thine immaterial glory, guarding us who now fall down and cry to thee with fervor: Deliver us from dangers of all kinds, as the great Marshal of the heavenly hosts on high..

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “How magnified are Thy works, O Lord! In Wisdom hast Thou made them all.”

Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul!”  Psalm 103:2 6,1)

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians. (16:13-24)

Brethren, be watchful, be established in the faith, be manly, be strong.  Let all your things be done in love.  Now I beseech you, brethren (since you know the house of Stephanas, that it is the first fruits of Achaia, and that they have set themselves for the ministry of the saints), that you also be subject to such, and to everyone who is a fellow worker and laborer.  I rejoice at the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatos and Achaicos, for that which was lacking on your part they supplied.  For they refreshed my spirit as well as yours; therefore acknowledge such men.

The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.  All the brethren salute you.  Salute one another with a holy kiss. The salutation of me, Paul, is with my own hand.  If any one does not love the Lord, let him be anathema. Maranatha! The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. My love be with you all in Christ Jesus. Amen.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (21:33-42)

The Lord spoke this parable: “There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country.  When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.  Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them.  Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But when the tenants saw the son, they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him.  When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their season.” Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ‘The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?”

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 4

Having learned the joyful message of the Resurrection from the angel, the women disciples of the Lord cast from them their parental condemnation. And proudly broke the news to the Disciples, saying: Death hath been spoiled; Christ God is risen, granting the world Great Mercy.

Apolytikion of the Baptist’s Beheading – Tone 2

The memory of the righteous is celebrated with songs of praise, but the Lord’s testimony is sufficient for thee, O Forerunner.  Thou wast shown indeed to be the most honorable of the prophets, for in the waters thou didst baptize Him Who had been proclaimed.  After suffering with joy in behalf of the truth, thou didst proclaim even to those in Hades the God Who appeared in the flesh, Who takest away the sin of the world, and granteth us the Great Mercy.

Kontakion of the Nativity of the Theotokos – Tone 4

By thy holy nativity, O pure one, Joachim and Anna were delivered from the reproach of barrenness; and Adam and Eve were delivered from the corruption of death; thy people do celebrate it, having been saved from the stain of iniquity, crying unto thee: The barren doth give birth to the Theotokos, who nourisheth our life.

Nourishment of the Soul:  “Fortunate is the man who has come to have God as his helper and to have his hopes in Him alone.  Let the Devil bear malice towards him, let all men persecute him and plot against him, let all his adversaries fight against him — he never fears anyone, because he has God as his helper. He remains always a victor, always glorified, always happy, always rich, always cheerful and joyful, even if he happened to fall into extreme poverty and into a great many adverse and grievous circumstances of this present life.  For inasmuch as he hopes in Almighty God, he does not despair, he is not sorry, is not anxious, but expects help from Above.  Fortunate, then, is such a man and worthy to be deemed happy, just as the Prophet-king David regards such a man as happy, saying: ‘Blessed is he who helper is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God.” Such were all the Prophets, the Apostles, the Martyrs, the Holy Ascetics and all the Saints from the beginning of time.” –St. Nikephoros of Chios

The Saint John of Damascus Society has made great progress in its ‘Psalm 103 Project,’ and we invite you to visit http://www.thepsalm103project.org to learn more about it.  There you will read comments by our own Richard Barrett that describe the project, its music, as well as a beautiful tribute to the late Richard Toensing, one of the six composers who contributed so brilliantly to the project.  The goal of the Society is to ‘reveal Orthodox Christianity through its sacred music,’ and we believe that the Psalm 103 Project does precisely that.  There’s more to come, so please stay tuned. — Hal Sabbagh

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “O chant unto our God, chant ye.”

Verse: “Clap your hands, all ye nations!”  Psalm 46: 6,1)

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians. (15:1-11)

Brethren, I make known to you the gospel which I preached to you, which you also received, in which you also stand, by which you also are saved, if you hold fast to the words which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

For I handed over to you first of all that which was also handed over to me: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures; and that He was buried; and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures; and that He was seen by Cephas; then by the twelve; after that, He was seen by more than five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain until present, but some have fallen asleep; after that, He was seen by James, then by all the apostles; and last of all, as to one born out of due time, He was also seen by me.  For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.  But by the grace of God, I am what I am; and His grace, which was bestowed on me, was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than them all; yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.  Therefore whether it was I or they, so we preach, and so you believed.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (19:16-26)

At that time, a young man came up to Jesus, kneeling and saying, “Good Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?” And He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.  If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” He said to Him, “Which?” And Jesus said, “You shall not kill, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”  The young man said to Him, “All these I have observed; what do I still lack?” Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”  When the young man heard this, he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.  And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of heaven.  Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”  When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”  But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”         .

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 3

Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, for the Lord hath done a mighty act with His own arm.  He hath trampled down death by death, and become the first-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of Hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.

Apolytikion of the Dormition – Tone 1

In thy birth-giving, O Theotokos, thou didst keep and preserve virginity; and in thy falling-asleep thou hast not forsaken the world; for living thou was translated, being the Mother of Life.  Wherefore, by thine intercessions, deliver out souls from death.

Kontakion of the Dormition – Tone 2

Verily, the Theotokos, who is ever watchful in intercessions, who is never rejected, neither tomb nor death could control. But being the Mother of Life, He Who dwelt in her ever-Virgin womb did translate her to life.

Megalynarion of the Feast – Tone 1 (instead of It is Truly Meet)

In thee, O spotless Virgin, the laws of nature were suspended; for thy virginity was preserved in thy child-bearing, and Life is joined with death, Thou, O Theotokos, didst remain a Virgin after child-birth, and after death thou art still alive and dost ever deliver thy heritage.

Koinonikon (Communion Hymn) of the Feast – Tone 8

I will receive the cup of salvation and call upon the Name of the Lord. Alleluia.

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “The Lord is my strength and my song.”

Verse: “With chastisement has the Lord chastened me!”  Psalm 117: 14,18)

Epistle: The Reading is from Saint Paul’s First Epistle to the Corinthians. (9:2-12)

Brethren, the seal of my apostleship are you in the Lord.  My defense to those who would examine me is this: Do we have no authority regarding what to eat and what to drink?  Do we have no authority to lead about a wife, who is a sister, as the rest of the apostles, even as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?  Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no authority to refrain from working?  Which soldier ever served at his own expense?  Who plants a vineyard and does not eat the fruit thereof?  Or who shepherds a flock and does not eat from the milk of the flock?

Do I speak of these things according to human nature?  Or does not the Law say the same also?  For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Thou shalt not muzzle an ox which treads out the grain.”  Is it for oxen that God cares, or does He say it altogether for our sakes?  Indeed, for our sakes it was written: because he who plows ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope, so that the same might partake in hope.  If we have sown in you spiritual things, is it a great matter if we should reap your carnal things?  If others are partakers of this authority over you, are we not even more?  Nevertheless, we have not made use of this authority, but we endure all things, in order that we may cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (18:23-35)

The Lord spoke this parable:  “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.  When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.  So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.  But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt.  When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place,. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had  mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt.  So also My Heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 2

When Thou didst submit Thyself unto death, O Thou deathless and immortal One, then Thou didst destroy hell with Thy Godly power.  And when Thou didst raise the dead from beneath the earth, all the powers of Heaven did cry aloud unto Thee; O Christ, Thou giver of life, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion of the Icon of Christ – Tone 2

Thy pure image do we venerate, O good One, asking forgiveness of our sins, O Christ our God; for by Thine own will Thou dist ascend the Cross in Thy body, to save Thy creatures from the bondage of the enemy. Thou hast verily filled all with joy, since Thou didst come, O our Savior, to save the world. (Words may be slightly different in a musical setting.)
