Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “The Lord will give strength unto His people.”

Verse: “Bring unto the  Lord, ye sons of God; bring unto the Lord glory and honor!”  Psalm 28:11,1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s First Epistle to  Timothy.  (4:9-15)

My Child Timothy, faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptance.  For to this end we both labor and suffer reproach, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of those who believe.  These things command and teach. Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to those who believe, in word, in manner of life, in love, in spirit, in faith, and in purity.  Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching.  Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the priests.  Meditate on these things; give yourself wholly to them; that your progress may be manifest to all.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (19:1-10)

At That Time, Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.  And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector, and rich.  And he sought to see Who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd, because he was small of stature.  So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Jesus, for He was to pass that way.  And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today.”  So he made haste and came down, and received Him joyfully.  And when they saw it, they all murmured, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”  And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”  And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

 Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 2

When Thou didst submit Thyself unto death, O Thou deathless and immortal One, then Thou didst destroy hell with Thy Godly power.  And when Thou didst raise the dead from beneath the earth, all the powers of Heaven did cry aloud unto Thee; O Christ, Thou giver of life, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion for SS. Cyrus and John –  Tone 5

Since Thou hast given us the miracles of Thy holy Martyrs, Cyrus and John, as an invincible battlement, by their entreaties scatter the counsels of the heathen, O Christ our God, and strengthen the faith of Orthodox Christians, since Thou alone art good and the Lover of mankind.

Kontakion of the Presentation of Christ – Tone 1

Thou, O Christ God, Who by Thy Birth, didst sanctify the Virgin’s womb, and, as is meet, didst bless Simeon’s arms, and didst also come to save us; preserve Thy fold in wars, and confirm them whom Thou didst love, for Thou alone art the Lover of mankind.

     Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance.”

Verse: “Unto Thee, O Lord, will I cry, O my God! Psalm 27:9,1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s First Epistle to  Timothy.  (1:15-17)

My Child Timothy, faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief.  But for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might show forth all longsuffering for a pattern to those who should thereafter believe in Him for life eternal.  Now unto the King eternal, incorruptible, invisible, to the only wise God, be honor and glory unto ages of ages. Amen.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (18:35-43)

At That Time, as Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging; and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant.  They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”  And he cried, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”  And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” And Jesus stopped, and commanded him to be brought to Him; and when he came near, Jesus asked him, “What do you want Me to do for you?”  He said, “Lord, let me receive my sight.”  And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.”  And immediately he received his sight and followed Him, glorifying God; and all the people, when they saw it gave praise to God.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 1

While the stone was sealed by the Jews, and the soldiers were guarding Thy most pure body, Thou didst arise on the third day, O Savior, granting life to the world.  For which cause the heavenly powers cried aloud unto Thee, O Giver of Life. Glory to Thy Resurrection, O Christ; Glory to Thy Kingdom,; Glory to Thy Providence, O Thou Who alone art the lover of mankind.

Apolytikion of St Xenia of St. Petersburg – Tone 8

In thee, O wandering stranger, Christ the Lord hath given us an ardent intercessor for our kind.  For having received in thy life sufferings and grief and served God and men with love, thou didst acquire great boldness. Wherefore, we fervently hasten to thee in temptations and grief, crying out from the depths of our hearts: Put not our hope to shame, O Blessed Xenia.

Kontakion of the Presentation of Christ – Tone 1

Venerable and God-Bearing Father Anthony the Great

Anthony the New, Ascetic of Berrea in Macedonia; New-Martyr George of Ioannina

At All Saints, we warmly welcome our visitors as honored guests.

Nourishment of the Soul:  “When the holy Abba Anthony lived in the desert he was beset by accidie, and attacked by many sinful thoughts,  he said to God, ‘ Lord, I want to be saved but these thoughts do not leave me alone; what shall I do in my affliction?  How can I be saved?’ A short while afterwards, when he got up to go out, Anthony saw a man like himself sitting at his work, getting up from his work to pray, then sitting down and plaiting a rope, then getting up again to pray. It was an angel of the Lord sent to correct and reassure him. He heard the angel saying to him, ‘Do this and you will be saved.’ At these words, Anthony was filled with joy and courage. He did this and he was saved.”- The Sayings of the Desert Fathers

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His Saints.”

Verse: “What shall I render unto the Lord, for all that He has given us? Psalm 115:6,3

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Epistle to  the Hebrews.  (13:17-21)

Brethren, be obedient to those who preside over you, and submit yourselves to them, for they watch over your souls with vigilance, as those who will give account, in order that they may do this with joy, and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.

Pray for us; for we are persuaded that we have a good conscience, in all things willing to conduct ourselves honorably.  But I exhort you the more exceedingly to do this, that I may be restored to you the sooner.  Now may the God of Peace, who brought again from the dead the great ‘Shepherd of the sheep’ by ‘the Blood of the everlasting Covenant,’ even our Lord Jesus, perfect you in every good work to do His will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory unto ages of ages. Amen.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (17:12-19)

At That Time, as Jesus entered a village, He was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted up their voices and said, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”  When He saw them He said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.”  And as they went they were cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus’ feet, giving Him thanks. Now he was a Samaritan.  Then Jesus said, “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine?  Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?”  And He said to him, “Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well.”

Apolytikion of St Anthony the Great – Tone 4

Thou didst become like the zealous Elijah in his condition, and followed John the Baptist in his upright ways, becoming a dweller in the wilderness and an establisher of the universe by thy prayer, O Father Anthony.  Wherefore, intercede thou with Christ God to save our souls.

Kontakion of the Presentation of Christ – Tone 1

Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “Let Thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us.”

Verse: “Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous!”  Psalm 32:22,1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Second Epistle to  the Ephesians.  (4:7-13)

Brethren, to each one of us is given the grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.  Therefore He says, “When He ascended up on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men.”  (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that He also descended into the lower parts of the earth?  The One who descended is the same also Who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)  And He gave some to be apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; for the perfection of the saints, for the work of ministry, for the building up of the Body of Christ, until we all arrive at the unity of the faith, and the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, toward the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (4:12-17)

At That Time, when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee; and leaving Nazareth, He went and dwelt in Capernaum by the Sea, in the territory of Zebulon and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the Prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “The Land of Zebulon and the Land of Naphtali, toward the Sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles–the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death, Light has dawned.”  From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”

2nd Antiphon

Save us, O Son of God, Who wast baptized by John in the Jordan

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 7

Thou didst shatter death by Thy Cross; Thou didst open paradise to the thief; Thou didst turn the sadness of the ointment-bearing women into joy. And didst bid Thine Apostles proclaim a warning, that Thou hast risen, O Christ, granting to the world the Great Mercy.

Apolytikion for the Theophany of Christ – Tone 4

When Thou, O Lord, wast baptized in the Jordan, worship of the Trinity was made manifest; for the voice of the Father bore witness to Thee, calling Thee His beloved Son.  And the Spirit in the form of a dove confirmed the truth of His word. O, Christ our God, Who hath appeared and enlightened the world, glory to Thee.

Kontakion of the Theophany of Christ – Tone 4

Today Thou hast appeared to the universe, O Lord, and Thy Light hath been shed upon us, who praise Thee with knowledge, saying, Thou hast come and appeared, O Unapproachable Light.
