Sunday after the Elevation of the Holy Cross

 Nourishment of the Soul: “Do not think that the Lord has abandoned you. No! He is always with you and invisibly sustains you, even when you forget Him.  He will not burden you with trials beyond your capacity.  Fear nothing, but with total humbleness and devotion bear your cross and pray. He is the gentlest of fathers that could be wished for.  If on occasion He allows His faithful servants to be tempted, it is only to remind them of their feebleness and to completely cleanse their hearts from pride.  In our hearts is where He intends to reside with His Son and His Holy Spirit. — St. Innocent of Alaska

Plan ahead to attend or help with our annual Festival, scheduled for October 8th.  Check with Nina for indoor baked goods, with John or Amal to help with outdoor food booths, Don for cleaning tables, Charles for the Children’s area, Lucia and Lisa for kitchen work, Vicki for silent auction baskets, Marcia and Father for general questions. You may wonder how the income is used.  Each year the festival committee considers the community’s  greatest need. Last year the receipts allowed us to save adequate funds to pay for this year’s festival and to make a healthy contribution to the Temple Fund. The decision for this year will be made later.

Orthodoxy 101: On Wednesday, September 21st, John Craton will present the lesson “Apologetics”. A small pitch-in is usually donated by a few of those attending.

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession. Deacon cannot bless at the cup.

Deacon Lucas Christensen, formerly of this parish, will be ordained today into the Holy Priesthood  at Holy Trinity in Carmel. Fr. Peter Jon and many parishioners will attend. In Father’s absence, Deacon Lawrence will serve a Eucharistic Typika. The service begins at 10:00 am and is not preceded by Matins.

On September 30, All Saints hosts the Indianapolis chapter of Orthodox Christians for Life for Great Vespers of the Protection of the Theotokos, followed by dinner and a presentation. 

Alice Piercefield continues to recover from her kidney surgery in Indianapolis. Please see Charles Coats for details of what may be helpful.

 Epistle: The Reading from  St. Paul’s Epistle to the Galatians. (2:16-20)

Brethren, knowing that a person is not justified by the works of the Law, but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law: for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be justified.  But if, while we sought to be justified in Christ, we ourselves also were found sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin?  God forbid!  For if I build up again those things which I destroyed, I prove myself a transgressor.  For I through the law died to the law,  that I might live to God.  I have been crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself up for me.

Orthodoxy 101: On Wednesday, September 14th Greg Gillquist (Fr. Peter Jon’s brother from Alaska) will be teaching Communication 101  about basic communication skills during Orthodoxy 101. These skills will help in friendships, families, business and all other relationships.  This is a presentation Greg gives at hospitals, businesses and churches all over the state of Alaska. A meal has been pre-planned.

A Festival Meeting has been scheduled for today after Divine Liturgy.  In one month this year’s annual Festival on Fairfax will be but a memory! Let’s make sure that we are ready and that our parish has set aside the date to attend or to help!

Brethren, see how large a letter I have written to you with my own hand.  As many as desire to make a fair show in the flesh, they compel you to be circumcised, only that they may not be persecuted for the Cross of Christ.  For not even those who are circumcised do themselves keep the Law; but they desire to have you circumcised, that they may boast in your flesh.

But God forbid that I should boast, except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through Whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world.

For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be upon them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.

New Church Van: You may have noticed a new, white 12-passenger van in the parking lot.  It was gifted to All Saints and will serve to shuttle IU students who need rides to-and-from the Divine Liturgy on Sundays.  If you know  a student who needs a ride, please direct them to Subdeacon Jon Weber or to Howard Webb.

Orthodoxy 101 resumes on Wednesday, September 7th after the Liturgy for the Nativity of the Theotokos.  Titled “Back to Basics: Why I Need Christ and the Church.”, the class will be led by Fr. Epistle: The Reading from  St. Paul’s First Epistle to Corinthians. (9:2-12)

Brethren, the seal of my apostleship are you in the Lord.  My defense to those who would examine me is this: do we have no authority regarding what to eat and what to drink?  Do we have no authority to lead about a wife, who is a sister, as the rest of the apostles, even as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?  Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no authority to refrain from working?  Which soldier ever served at his own expense?  Who plants a vineyard and does not eat the fruit thereof?  Or who shepherds a flock and does not eat from the milk of the flock?

Do I speak of these things according to human nature?  Or does not the Law say the same also?  For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Thou shalt not muzzle an ox which treads out the grain.”  Is it for oxen that God cares, or does He say it altogether for our sakes?  Indeed, for our sakes it was written: because he who plows ought to plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope, so that the same might partake in hope.  If we have sown in you spiritual things, is it a great matter if we should reap your carnal things?  If others are partakers of this authority over you, are we not even more?  Nevertheless, we have not made use of this authority, but we endure all things, in order that we may cause no hindrance to the gospel of Christ.

The Lord spoke this parable: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.  When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.  So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’  And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.  But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’  So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’  He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt.  When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place.  Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant!  I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’  And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt.  So also My heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

New Church Van: You may have noticed a new, white 12-passenger van in the parking lot.  It was gifted to All Saints and will serve to shuttle IU students who need rides to-and-from the Divine Liturgy on Sundays.  If you know  a student who needs a ride, please direct them to Subdeacon Jon Weber or to Howard Webb.

Orthodoxy 101 resumes after the liturgy for the Nativity of the Theotokos on September 7th.and titled “Back to Basics: Why I Need Christ and the Church.” Communication 101: On Wednesday, September 14th Greg Gillquist (Fr. Peter Jon’s brother from Alaska) will be teaching about basic communication skills during Orthodoxy 101. These skills will help in friendships, families, business and all other relationships.  This is a presentation Greg gives at hospitals, businesses and churches all over the state of Alaska.

They Don’t Vacation: Our parish operating expenses do not take the summer off;  so please do your best to keep your tithes and offerings current, and add a little extra if you have been blessed to do so. Thank you for your added contributions.

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Kh. Loretta Wilson, wife of Fr. Athanasius,  passed from this life to be with Christ on Thursday afternoon. Monday from 4-8 pm is the Viewing at St. George, Fishers with the Funeral at 10:30 and the mercy meal following at St. George. Burial will be at All Saints Cemetery in Bloomington, Indiana (6004 S. Fairfax Rd.) in the afternoon. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Mary’s.(St. George 10748 E. 116th St in  Fishers — St. Mary’s 102 E. Broadway, Greenwood 46143)

Myrrh Bearers will meet today during coffee hour. All women, post- high school, are welcome at our meetings.  Discussion of a fundraiser and  Sunday, September 25th IU Family Weekend are business items, but prayer and devotion are always on the agenda.

Epistle: The Reading from  St. Paul’s First Epistle to Corinthians. (4:9-16)

Brethren, God has revealed us, the Apostles, as last of all, as those appointed to death; for we have become a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men.  We are fools for Christ’s sake, but you are wise in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are glorified, but we are dishonored.  Even to this present hour we both hunger and thirst, we are naked, and are buffeted, and are restless; and we labor, working with our own hands.  While reviled, we bless; while persecuted, we endure; while blasphemed, we exhort; we have become the filth of the world and the off-scouring of all things, even until now.

I do not write these things to make you ashamed, but to admonish you as my beloved children; for though you have a myriad of tutors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for I begat you in Christ Jesus through the gospel.  I beseech you, therefore, be imitators of me.

Gospel: The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (17:14-23)

            At that time, a man came up to Jesus and kneeling before Him said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and he suffers terribly; for often he falls into the fire, and often into the water.  And I brought him to Thy disciples, and they could not heal him.”  And Jesus answered, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long am I to be with you?  How long am I to bear with you?  Bring him here to me.”  And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him, and the boy was cured instantly.  Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”  Jesus said to them, “Because you have no faith.  For truly, I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.  This kind never comes out except by prayer and fasting.” As they were traveling together through Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him, and He will rise on the third day.”
