 Do you know: There was a time when people put on their ‘Sunday best’ to go to church.  Though God does not demand us to ‘dress up’ for Him (as though He is in any way impressed by our external appearance), the fact is, as followers of Christ in all areas of our life, we should offer Christ our ‘best’ and not just our ‘leftovers’. Our dress should always, especially at church, be becoming of a Christian.  We dress modestly, not in a flashy way that merely brings attention to ourselves.

Icon of the Protection of the Theotokos: Icon of the Protection of the Theotokos: So far, $483 has been given toward the painting of an 11×17 icon of the Protection of the Theotokos.  Our goal is $700 – we’re two-thirds there! 

Women’s Care Center:  Donations can be made to All Saints to be sent or  give them to Patricia Finchum, representing Orthodox Christians for Life .See the bulletin board for more information.

Housekeeping: Thank you for your many contributions of food each Sunday and each special day. However, serving plates, plastics, and cookware have been forgotten and left here! There is quite an accumulation in the kitchen storage area.  If the shelves get too full, we may have to consider donating to Goodwill! But, if your cupboard is bare, please check ours or the table in the hallway!

Titus, my son, the saying is sure. As for a man who is factious, after admonishing him once or twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is perverted and sinful; he is self-condemned. When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing. Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them, but to fulfill them. Icon of the Protection of the Theotokos: So far, $343 has been given toward the painting of an 11×17 icon of the Protection of the Theotokos.  Our goal is $700 – we’re half way there! This icon will be displayed at the Akathist of the Protection of the Theotokos on the last Friday of each month, and will be the patronal icon for our local chapter of Orthodox Christians for Life, whose goal is the preservation of life in the womb and continuing care and prayerful support of parents & babies in need.

Women’s Care Center:  Donations of items for babies age 1 year and younger and for their mothers can be brought to the church. Patricia Finchum (representing Orthodox Christians for Life) will get them to the center to help women who might otherwise have chosen abortion instead of life. Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

Prokeimenon: “O Lord, how magnificent are Your works. You have made all things in Wisdom.”

Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul.”  Psalm 103: 24, 1

Epistle: The Reading is from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans. (10:1-10)

Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that it may be saved. I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law, that everyone who has faith may be justified. Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the law shall live by it. But the righteousness based on faith says: Do not say in your heart, “Who will ascend into Heaven?” (that is, to bring Christ down) or “Who will descend into the abyss?” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach); because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved.

At that time, when Jesus came to the country of the Gergesenes, two demoniacs met Him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. And behold, they cried out, “What have we to do to Thee, O Son of God?  Art Thou come here to torment us before the time?” Now a herd of many swine was feeding at some distance from them. And the demons begged Him, “If Thou castest us out, send us away into the herd of swine.” And He said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the swine; and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea, and perished in the waters. The herdsmen fled, and going into the city they told everything, and what had happened to the demoniacs. And behold, all the city came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they begged Him to leave their neighborhood. And getting into a boat He crossed over and came to His own city.

The Placing of the Theotokos’ Robe in Blachernae

Do you Know as we approach the Holy Cup, we are reverently focused on what we are about to receive, looking neither to the left nor the right, not visiting with others along the way.  We cross our arms, right over left.  Some kiss the Chalice gently while others do not.  We await the final words of the priest or deacon at the time we have received the Holy Eucharist, “…unto the forgiveness of sins and unto life everlasting.”  We accept blessed bread from the altar servers and return to stand in the presence of Christ.  It is good to offer blessed bread to those who have not received the Eucharist.

Epistle: The Reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews. (9:1-7)

Brethren, even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary. For a tent was prepared, the outer one, in which were the lamp stand and the table and the bread of the Presence; it is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain stood a tent called the Holy of Holies, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, which contained a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail. These preparations having thus been made, the priests go continually into the outer tent, performing their ritual duties; but into the second only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people.

Gospel: The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (8:5-13) 

At that time, as Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came forward to him, beseeching Him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, in terrible distress.” And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” But the centurion answered Him, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard him, He marveled, and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and sit at table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven, while the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; be it done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed at that very moment.

 Today’s Epistle and Gospel Readings

 Prokeimenon: “The Lord is my strength and my song.”

Epistle: The Reading from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans. (5:1-11)

Brethren, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Through Him we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in our hope of sharing the glory of God.  More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to us.  While we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.  Why, one will hardly die for a righteous man—though perhaps for a good man one will dare even to die.  But God shows His love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.  Since, therefore, we are now justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God.  For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.  Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received our reconciliation.

Gospel: The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew. (6:22-33)

The Lord said, “The eye is the lamp of the body.  So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is evil, your whole body will be full of darkness.  If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!  No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.  You cannot serve God and mammon.  Therefore, I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink; nor about your body, what you shall put on.  Is not the soul more than food, and the body more than clothing?  Look at the birds of heaven: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not of more value than they?  And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his stature?  And why are you anxious about clothing?  Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon himself in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O men of little faith?  Therefore, do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’  For the Gentiles seek all these things; and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.  But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be yours as well.”

Divine Liturgy Variables

Do you Know: The choir or chanters  follow the clergy’s lead,  and then the people follow the choir or chanters in the responses and hymns of the services.  This avoids an echo effect, and lets the parish be one angelic voice. 

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 2

Apolytikion of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist – Tone 4

O prophet and Forerunner of Christ God’s coming to us, * all we who with longing now extol thee are at a loss to honor thee worthily. * For thy mother’s barrenness and father’s long silence, * by thine all-renowned and hallowed birth, were both ended, * and the Incarnation of the Son of God is preached unto all the world.
