Brethren, I would have you know that the Gospel which was preached by me is not man’s gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the Church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people; so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when He Who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through His grace, was pleased to reveal His Son to me, in order that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were Apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other Apostles except James the Lord’s brother.

The Lord said, “There was a rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, full of sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man’s table; moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried; and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes, and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus in his bosom. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy upon me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’”

Receiving the Eucharist:We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

Man of God Viewing: All are invited to join Teen SOYO on Saturday, November 5 (following Great Vespers) to watch the film, Man of God, about the life of Saint Nectarios. Young children may not find the film engaging, as it is intended for adult & young adult audiences. Saint Nectarios feast day is Wednesday, November 9th.

Church Etiquette – Cell Phones: We’ve all seen signs asking us to silence cell phones before entering a church or theatre. I would like to take it a step further and ask you to consider leaving your phone in the car altogether. There are obvious exceptions to this, such as physicians-on-call, but for most of us, phones amount to nothing more than a potential distraction from the Holy Services. Think about it: as we sing “Let us now lay aside all earthly cares…” our pocket begins vibrating to alert us that cousin Sally’s instagram account has an updated photo from the Bahamas. Opportunities to gather with the faithful at the throne of God in “The Kingdom” are few and far between, and our call, text or Google search can wait.

At that time, Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. And as He stepped out on land, there met Him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, “What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beseech Thee, do not torment me.” For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. And they begged Jesus not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged Jesus to let them enter these.  So He gave them leave. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed. Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked Jesus to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so He got into the boat and returned. The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with Jesus; but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare all that God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for him.

Church Etiquette – Making the Sign of the Cross: It is good to make the sign of the cross before and after any prayer; when we enter and leave the narthex and nave; before kissing an Icon, Cross, or the Gospel Book; when we pass in front of the Altar; when we hear “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;” after the reading of the Epistle or Gospel; before and after the Consecration of the bread and wine during the Divine Liturgy when the Priest says, ‘Thine own of Thine own…’  Please do not cross yourself at the chalice as you may cause the Holy Eucharist to spill.

Titus, my son, faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire you to affirm confidently, that those who have believed in God may be thoughtful of how to preside in honorable occupations. These things are good and profitable to men. But avoid foolish disputes, and genealogies, and contentions, and controversies about the Law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man who is a heretic after the first and second admonition reject, knowing that such a one is subverted, and sins, being self-condemned. When I send Artemas to you, or Tychicós, give diligence to come to me to Nicopolis; for I have determined to winter there. Set forward Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that they may be lacking in nothing. And let our people also learn how to preside in honorable occupations, so as to help in cases of urgent need, that they should not be unfruitful. All who are with me salute you. Salute those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:5-15)

The Lord spoke this parable: “A sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell along the path, and was trodden under foot, and the birds of the air devoured it.  And some fell on the rock; and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture.  And some fell among thorns; and the thorns grew with it and choked it.  And some fell into good soil and grew, and yielded a hundredfold.”  And when His Disciples asked Him what this parable meant, Jesus said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God; but for others they are in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.  Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.  The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts that they may not believe and be saved.  And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy; but these have no root, they believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.  And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.  And as for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bring forth fruit with patience.”  As Jesus said this, He called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Church Etiquette: Food and drink aren’t permitted in the Nave, with rare exception. If you believe you are an exception, please see Father Peter Jon. It is never proper to chew gum in the church. One should not chew gum immediately after receiving Holy Communion, but should properly wait at least half the day.

Brethren, we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will live in them and move among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Therefore, come out from them, and be separate from them,” says the Lord, “and touch nothing unclean; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”  Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the fear of God.

The Gospel

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (7:11-16)

At that time, Jesus went to a city called Nain, and many of His disciples and a great crowd went with Him. As He drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, “Do not weep.” And He came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And Jesus said, “Young man, I say to you: arise.” And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And Jesus gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and “God has visited His people!”

Receiving the Eucharist:We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.

These are not meant to be “laws,” but rather instructions on a good and proper way to orient ourselves toward Christ in His holy Church. Perhaps the most important thing to be emphasized here is that we are to look at where I, myself, may fall short and need improvement, and not focus on my neighbor (Matt. 7:3-5). Thank you for reading.

Church Etiquette: When to Stand during the Liturgy

Our tradition is to stand during worship as much as we can, silently, reverently, facing the holy Altar. Christ is invisibly present in our midst. It is okay to sit down if you need to. There are, however, certain times in the Divine Liturgy when everyone should stand. We always stand during the Little Entrance, when the priest (carrying the Gospel Book) and the servers exit the north deacon’s door and process to the Solea, where the priest proclaims, “Wisdom! Let us attend!” (This literally means “stand up straight!”). We always stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel, and in our tradition, for the reading of the Epistle as well – as your strength permits.  We stand during the Great Entrance, the reciting of the Nicene Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer.   We stand when the priest blesses the people, for example, “Peace be to all!”  It is important that we stand during the consecration of the Holy Gifts (the Anaphora prayers, “Thine own of Thine own…”) We stand the entire time Holy Communion is being served (it is improper to sit after receiving the body and blood of Christ). And finally, we stand for the dismissal.

Church Etiquette – Attire in Church (part 2, head-coverings): 

Men should remove their hats when entering the church and keep their heads uncovered until departing the church. The only exception to this is when members of the clergy are directed to don liturgical headgear for particular reasons, at appointed times.  The Scriptural basis for the prohibition of men wearing hats in church is found in 1 Corinthians, chapter 11:

Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head.But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head (v. 4-5)…

This brings us to the topic of women covering their heads in church.  Some women choose to cover their head, wearing either a traditional head-covering or a hat. St. Paul implies that this form of piety brings honor upon a woman, as her hair is “a glory to her.” Covering the thing that brings her glory in the presence of God is an act of submission and humility before Him. In the ancient Church, Christian head coverings among Orthodox women was a universal practice. Many Church Fathers mention this, including Clement of Alexandria, Hippolytus of Rome and John Chrysostom, among others. In addition, all women in icons traditionally have their heads covered, with the exception of Eve and St. Mary of Egypt (whose clothes had disintegrated and fallen from her body). While head-coverings are not required, they are a meaningful aspect of our Church’s holy tradition.
