First Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday of All Saints
Prophet Amos; Apostles Achaikos, Stephen and Fortunatos of the Seventy
Apostles Fast begins on Monday, June 16, and ends with the feast of the Holy Apostles Peter & Paul on Sunday, June 29. Fish, wine and oil are allowed on all days of the fast except Wednesdays and Fridays.
Father Peter Jon will be in Louisville this week at the Parish Life Conference. He will return late Saturday night.
Thought for Today: “Who hated sin more than the saints? But they did not hate the sinners at the same time, nor condemn them, nor turn away from them. But they suffered with them, admonished them, comforted them, gave them remedies as sickly members, and did all they could to heal them.” – St. Dorotheos of Gaza
Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 8
From the heights Thou didst descend, O compassionate One, and Thou didst submit to the three-day burial, that Thou might deliver us from passion; Thou art our life and our Resurrection, O Lord, glory to Thee.
Apolytikion of All Saints – Tone 4
Throughout the world, Thy Church, O Christ our God, is adorned with the blood of Thy martyrs, as with purple and fine linen. Through them, She cries unto Thee, send down Thy pity upon Thy people, to Thy community give peace, and to our souls, the great mercy.
Kontakion of All Saints – Tone 8
As first-fruits of our nature to the Planter of created things, * the world presenteth the God-bearing martyred Saints in off’ring unto Thee, O Lord. * Through their earnest entreaties, * keep Thy Church in deep peace and divine tranquility, * through the pure Theotokos, O Thou Who art greatly merciful.
EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS
The Epistle
God is wonderful among His saints. Bless God in the congregations.
The Reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Hebrews. (11:33-12:2)
Brethren, all the saints through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, received promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword, won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by resurrection. Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, that they might rise again to a better life. Others suffered mocking and scourging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were killed with the sword; they went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, illtreated – of whom the world was not worthy- wandering over deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. And all these, though well attested by their faith, did not receive what was promise, since God had foreseen something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith.
The Gospel
The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.(10:32-33, 37-38; 19:27-30)
The Lord said to His disciples, “Everyone who acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father Who is in heaven; but whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before My Father Who is in heaven. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me; and he who does not take his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.” Then Peter said in reply, “Lo, we have left everything and followed Thee. What then shall we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the New World, when the Son of Man shall sit on His glorious throne, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My Name’s sake, will receive a hundred fold, and inherit eternal life. But many that are first will be last, and the last first.”
Receiving the Eucharist:We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession. If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread in the wooden bowls held by the altar servers at the front of the church.
An Important Reminder: Receiving Holy Communion is our most intimate collective moment with God each week. We should always refrain from talking to our neighbor during the time of communion, unless there is an urgent need. Standing reflectively in silence or singing along with the communion hymns are the the best ways to honor God in these holy moments.
Relocating: Nate, Maeghan, and daughter Lily Lanaghan are moving to Indianapolis. We knew their time here at All Saints wouldn’t be permanent, but that doesn’t make it any easier to say goodbye to our beloved family. May the Lord bless each of them and grant them Many Years! They will be missed!
Alaska Mission: Our Kodiak, Alaska Mission fundraiser, has reached its goal! Many thanks to all who contributed so generously. Any funds above our Alaska expenses will become a parish contribution toward the building of a new church in honor of our beloved Saint Olga in her tiny home village of Kwethluk, Alaska.
