Fall Catechism Classes: Catechism classes (Orthodoxy 101) are held each Wednesday evening immediately following Vespers. Classes will be held in the church and will be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person. Orthodoxy 101 this Wednesday will be taught by Dr. John Craton: Comparative Religions.

The Pantry: We are beginning to see more people with food insecurity coming to the pantry. During the months of extreme Covid restrictions, most needs were for utilities and other household expenses. With supplies in our pantry low or lacking variety, everything is needed but especially soup, canned tuna, beef and chicken/turkey, peanut butter and pasta sauce; but please, NO rice, penne, and spaghetti (we’re oversupplied at this time).  Thank you for filling these needs.

Receiving the Eucharist: We invite you to receive the Holy Eucharist if you are an Orthodox Christian who has prepared yourself through fasting, prayer, and recent confession.  If you are not Orthodox, or are Orthodox but  have not prepared, we invite you to receive a piece of the blessed bread.

EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS

The Reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Galatians. (1:11-19)

Sing praises to our God, sing praises. Clap your hands, all ye peoples.

Brethren, I would have you know that the Gospel which was preached by me is not man’s gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the Church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people; so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when He Who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through His grace, was pleased to reveal His Son to me, in order that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were Apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other Apostles except James the Lord’s brother.

The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (8:26-39)

At that time, Jesus arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.  And as He stepped out on land, there met Him a man from the city who had demons; for a long time he had worn no clothes, and he lived not in a house but among the tombs.  When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him, and said with a loud voice, “What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?  I beseech Thee, do not torment me.”  For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man.  [For many a time it had seized him; he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters, but he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the desert.]  Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?”  And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him.  And they begged Jesus not to command them to depart into the abyss.  Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside; and they begged Jesus to let them enter these.  So He gave them leave.  Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.  When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country.  Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.  And those who had seen it told them how he who had been possessed with demons was healed.  Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked Jesus to depart from them; for they were seized with great fear; so He got into the boat and returned.  The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with Jesus; but Jesus sent him away, saying, “Return to your home, and declare all that God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city all that Jesus had done for him.

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 3

Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad, for the Lord hath done a mighty act with His own arm.  He hath trampled down death by death, and become the first-born from the dead. He hath delivered us from the depths of Hades, granting the world the Great Mercy.

Apolytikion of SS. Marcian & Martyrios, the Notaries – Tone 4

Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee, * received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. * For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants * and wholly destroyed the demons’ strengthless presumption. * O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Nourishment of the Soul: “The inhabitants of this world, the children of this age, are like wheat in a sieve. They are being sifted by restless thoughts of this world. They are constantly tossed to and fro by earthly care, desire and absorption in a variety of material concerns. Satan tosses such souls as a sifter sifts wheat….By these concerns, he disturbs men, keeps them anxious and in a state of nervous motion.” – St. Makarios the Great

EPISTLE and GOSPEL READINGS

The Reading is from the Epistle of St. Paul to the Colossians. (4:5-11, 14-18)

His voice has gone out into all the earth. The heavens declare the glory of God.

Brethren, conduct yourselves wisely toward outsiders, making the most of the time.  Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone.  Tychicus will tell you all about my affairs; he is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord.  I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, and with him Onesimus, the faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you.  They will tell you of everything that has taken place.  Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, and Mark the cousin of Barnabas (concerning whom you have received instructions—if he comes to you, receive him), and Jesus who is called Justus.  These are the only men of the circumcision among my fellow workers for the kingdom of God, and they have been a comfort to me.  Luke the beloved physician and Demas greet you.  Give my greetings to the brethren at Laodicea, and to Nympha and the church in her house.  And when this letter has been read among you, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you read also the letter from Laodicea.  And say to Archippus, “See that you fulfill the ministry which you have received in the Lord.”  I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand.  Remember my fetters.  Grace be with you. Amen.

The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (10:16-21)

The Lord said, “He who hears you hears Me, and he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”  The Seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Thy Name!”  And Jesus said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.  Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing shall hurt you.  Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”  In that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the spirit and said, “I thank Thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that Thou hast hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes; yea, Father, for such was Thy gracious will.”

Resurrectional Apolytikion – Tone 2

When Thou didst submit Thyself unto death, O Thou deathless and immortal One, then Thou didst destroy hell with Thy Godly power.  And when Thou didst raise the dead from beneath the earth, all the powers of Heaven did cry aloud unto Thee; O Christ, Thou giver of life, glory to Thee.

Apolytikion of St. Luke the Evangelist – Tone 3

O holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke, intercede with the merciful God, to grant our souls forgiveness of sins.

Koinonikon (Communion Hymn) for St. Luke – Tone 8

His sound hath gone out into all the earth; and his words to the ends of the world. Alleluia.
